View Full Version : WIP "Dragon Rider" searching for feedback
Roykorpel 07-06-2009, 07:51 AM Hi guys,
For the gnomon workshop theme "dragon rider" I had a really funny sketch that I worked out. This is where I am atm.
But now.. the hard thing.. taking critics. Be nice for me please, couse I am so proud on this.. and help me making this drawing better. :)
Things I think about is: Add flowers and butterfly's. Some birds? adding princes toy stuff like a stick with a star in here hand and a pointy cap.

Hi,
What a wonderful joyful piece of art. I love this.
What I think might help, is if you connect the rest of the image with the cool style of that tree in the background, which is so stylized and cute. The photoshop hair brush you have used as grass and the leaf brush doesnt belong with the rest of the image, because the rest, aspecially the figures are so lovingly drawn.
With some beautiful clouds in the background i think the image will look fabolous and finished without new objects that might "clutter" up the focus points.
Awesome..
Looking forward to seeing the rest :)

Thanks,
You have a point there. I need to do something els with the grass. And also with the tree in the front for the depth. Keeping things in the same style.

You should be proud, it's an excellent image. It's very reminiscent of Bobby Chu's work. I love it! :)
My only tip is to study said artist's work, especially in black and white. You will see all the subtle value, cast shadow and form that his pictures has to make it feel cuddly and believable.
For example this one. (http://www.imaginismstudios.com/round2/wp-content/wallpapers/Wallpaper%20Set%206/Midnight%20Swim/00210midnightswimart.jpg)

Yes, his drawings and art like Denis Zilber are also great and a big inspiration source.
Thank you for your comment

I love this! I agree that the styles aren't quite meshing exactly. With the super detailed looking grass and the hyper stylized trees in the distance. If you'd like to keep allot of detail up front, perhaps make the grass look extremely kept? Maybe that could allow the two styles to co-exist. Not sure about that though, I always find stylized work difficult. This one will be great no matter what..

Thanks Scubasteve..
I figure it out. I switch over to autumn theme. So a lot of leaves falling down..and pushed up behind the running dragon. This give me the change to give the drawing more reds, browns and yellow's. It also fits better with the mushrooms.
I allready ripped out the grass.. This evening I will post the update version so far.. little bit in color :)

thanks guys for the feedback. Okey, here is the deal. I released the grass.. and i think the tree will be gone in the next update as well. Or a tree in cartoon style.
In this update i did some color filling.. But i found a lot of messy lines i need to fix or to remove. On a distance it is not doing any harm..but when u get close its damaging the drawing in my upinion.
Next, i will draw leaves all around.. and give it a ataumn theme! like this:

here the update so far. Please feel free to comment with feedback.

I have done a color study in my break on work. Just to get some mooth into the drawing. Also a quick texture with leaves for the concept. I think the grass can work like this..dont u think?
I must say that the printed version works better..couse its darker than te RGB version on screen. But that is easy to change offcourse.

Okay, i found some time to work some hours on the drawing. I fixed the grass like i said before.. and give my drawin a atumn theme. First i started with leaves textures..but it was to much photo and to less drawing. In this painting it does not fit..to much cartoon style. So, I throw away 2 hours playing with photos and masks.. and grabed my pencil and draw the leaves myself.
Sofar i am happy and i am getting somewhere. Hope to be back sunday. Please feel free enter feedback. That is why i post this here on this forum. Dont slice me in half :)
hope u like it. I also give it a little color, just playing and give it a mooth.
