View Full Version : IK constraint question ..
i have a character.. full rigged and all .. now i want him to jump off a box and hold on to a bar.. my question is how do i constraint his arms to the bar so that they dont move while he is swinging .. no matter what contraint i use the hand always moves away once i move his body .. maybe thats the way its supposed to work .. i dont know .. can someone shed some light plz .. thank you

Are using pointConstraint only, usually when you want to lock the hand at objects you need to constraint both positional and rotational. I think you will need 2 constraint in this case pointConstraint and orientConstraint.
:)
yea ... how do i go about doing that .. :) and yes i've only been doing 1 constraint..

Your hand joint (or palm/wirst joint whatever you called it) should be orient constraint to a locator too. Otherwise, when the IK try to solve the position, it will rotate upper joint which then carried down to this hand joint (which is the child).
That is why you see the hand is moving, with orient constraint you force this joint to take certain orientation which mean it doesn't move. But as soon as you lift the hand out of the contact object, you need to release this constraint back so the hand joint is naturally working with the the forearm joint.
Maybe you should create another locator as child of the forearm joint and let it control the orientation of the hand joint when it is not in contact with object. And you can animate the constraint weight so it's not snapping back when you release it.
Best regards,
hey man thanks for takign the time to reply .. i wi ll give that a try .. when i get the chance.. and let u know if it works..
