hi all,

i've got dual monitors, and i'm running 3ds. But the most viewports I can have is 4. As those are the only possible configurations in the 'layout' options. This seems fairly limiting. Anyone know any tips and tricks when dealing with dual monitors and 3ds max?

The configuration I've seen used most is to drag and expand the command panel out to the left, and dock it over on the right hand monitor. This gives you a huge panel full of tools and leaves the left screen open for viewports.

As for adding more that 4 views, I don't know. My gut says it's not possible, but then I've never tried it.

Just some thoughts. I'd be interested to know myself.

Now why the heck didn't I think of that before? Useful! Add that one to the tips 3DZealot!:D

I usually keep MaxScript listener and macro recorder on the second screen, to type in fast scripts on the fly.

Just another possibility :)

You know, alot of people forget that you can click on the point where your viewports meet, and drag the size around. It may be possible to play with that to get 2 views properly algned between the monitors.

Just another thought.

it is possible... however i find, with my particular video card (gf4 ti4200, 128mb) that one screen renders the viewports MUCH slower then the other... i guess it just dedicates more gpu to one monitor then the other?

so i do as above, tools/listner/material browser on left monitor, max on the right (you can go vice cersa of cause)

you can tear off any of the tool bars that you ave created (or the default ones) and place them as you like.

just remmeber to save your interface preferences, as getting a setup you like can take a while ;)

ive been using this layout for about 2 years now, and cant go back to a single display. ever.

I find myself using two different layouts for different tasks.

For modeling, I have the command panel on my 2nd screen, expanded to 3 columns, but primarily work on the 1st screen using one single viewport and mostly hotkeys. I actually find the constant travel between two screens a bit tedious - so I don't have my Photoshop layer palette "sorted out", either.

For animation (and level design with our custom max-plugin, for that matter), I have my command panel shrinked and docked on my 1st screen (for all those often-used biped keying buttons I don't have enough logical hotkeys left) and reserve the 2nd for the trackview or the level editor. Of course the trackview has to be minimized during animation play... :thumbsdow For the same reason it's not very clever to have the Mat-Edit always open on the 2nd screen.

i have a funny problem where once i have positioned my panels (and saved the locations of cause) if i try to move it it dissapears... and i have to load my layout again?

the ability to have 5 viewports would be nice

Marsel, what is that weird mini-toolbar at the top of your screen? It looks like a mini taskbar.
