Im thinking whether i should get an i7 920 or an 8 core shanghai?
Im planning on using video editing/some gaming/ watching movies---all stuff
I dont plan on OC a lot---maybe around 3 GHz and let it stay there.

Here is my hypothetical specs (rough):
I7 920 :$150 ---intel retail edge
12GB DDR3 :$160
(X58 Based mobo probably) Gigabyte EX58 U4DP~$210
Corsair HX520 (carry over):0
WD6400AAKS 640GB Caviar Blue(from current pc):0
Another WD6400AAKS Cavair Black 1TB (any other suggestions?): $100
Radeon 4850 (carry over): $0
Case-P180 (carry over): $0
Total is around $610 give or take

and might add the Dell 2209WA monitor

how does that look?
Im wondering if i should get 6-8GB and a SSD (OCZ Vertex?) instead?
Programs i like to use are 3DS Max/Maya--After Effects + Premiere (these 2 the most)--- Terragen + Vue

thank you very much

Hi,

I can tell you from first hand experience that the Core I7 is exactly what you want with Terragen 2.
It can use all "8" cores, so the 4 physical, plus the 4 HT, and then it's really quick. A totally different experience than anything you have used TG2 with before.
For me, the switch to the I7 was a 100% productivity increase with TG2.

There's a TG2 benchmark site, if that helps you:
