Instead of having 1 mesh just have separate parts like the left arm, left leg etc and then ik solve and hi solve them like that and put them together?

It could be useful to create proxy models. but for the character used to render, I don't recommend it. You'll have to match the weights around the edge all the time, and also the normals will not be smoothed across the border edges. In Maya you'll have to combine the meshes and apply another smooth or normal node before rendering the scene. This will make it much slower than using a whole piece.

Thanks for clearing that up a bit, I'm only working in max but anyway, like in the digital tutors videos they have multiple geometries and link corresponding bones to them. How would that work if I'm only working on 1 single human mesh?
