There really isn't much to say. It has the feeling of a smacked together poser scene.

Three things to consider:

1) Procedural textures alone in a scene stand out like a sore thumb. They are evil.

2) Detail is your friend. If you want this scene to look desolate and deserted: POPULATE it with dead things.. dry, old grass in the corners, some wispy clouds in the sky. Anything to make it more interesting

3) The lighting is ok, but is kind of flat. Light up the scene a bit more, it's too black. Make your shadows somewhat transparent. Maybe even tint them a dark blue.

Not bad I think though, you'd better keep the color temperature in mind I suppose, if you simulate the outdoor environment. And better fix the some pitch-black shadow spots.

Hope this would help.;)

Just remember that the two things that attract the eye in 3d are stylised art and detail.

uhm, no. What is that, marble? So they built the entire "castle" in marble, that's interesting!! How about making the obvious....well obvious? The statue should be made of marble, as well as the colons, whereas the rest of the structure should be stone. And this is really the first time i've ever seen something so big, in one single piece! Where did they get it? Plus, lose the hard shadows. SOFT SHADOWS. Use your main light (the sun) with soft shadows on, add a light parented to the camera (lights exactly the same way the camera looks) with about 30% of the main lights' intensity, and try adding two more lights with about 15% of the main lights', both parented to the camera, but one with a 90 degree on the Y axis, and the other with a -90 degree on the y axis, making them light sideways. None of the extra lights should have shadows or specularity enabled on them. This will reveal the details of your scene, and make it a bit more daylight. And well, take it from there. Next thing to do it fix those textures. Keep it going! And the sky? Well, just try using a 114:194:248 (sky blue) colour, that IS what you mostly see when you look out your window on a sunny day, isnt it?

Well, obviously you are going for that greek-roman look, so I might suggest looking in corbis (all trademarks registered) for pictures of the colloseum, of the parthenon, and of statues in general. An Aphrodite statue would be nice, to see the colour and texture of the marble they are using. Also, you have to think about the time. Is this picture near the time all these were made? If so, then you are looking for minimum damage on the scene. If this is a time period after some thousand years, you expect some damage on the structure, some on the statue and everything, depends on what you want to make.

And I suggest fixing that lighting asap. The way your scene is lit will determine the quality of your texturing. If your lights are off, then you cant expect correct results from your test renders.

the circular shadow part looks so sharp. You might want to soften it a bit by expanding the value in the spotlight parameter in the falloff/field tab. That was just my 2 cents....:)

I like your persistence! Here are some thoughts: I think you should model in imperfections into your model. Crack a column. Space them slightly unevenly. No Roman in the world could space things as well as 3DS. Use bevels/rounds as much as you can. Perfect edges are one of a CG artists biggest NO-NOs. Don’t be so perfect :)

I know this camera angel may not be your final, but consider placing the statue off center. Don’t line up the statue with the doorways in the background. It creates a little tension I think. How about having the lit up statue against a shaded wall? That’ll bring attention to the statue.

We need some size reference in the picture. I can’t tell how big that statue is, or how big those doorways are. Place some plants (that we know are a foot tall or so), or something else we know the size of (I leave that to you since I can’t think of anything now).

Soften the shadows and consider have a more interesting angel on the light. Right now it looks like harsh midday sun light. [radiosotiy doesn’t make lighting much easier...unfortunately]

Good luck!
