Originally a design by Paul Kidby.

Terry, the swamp dragon. I'm pretty much done with the modelling except for some detail around the wings and the feet. No inside of the mouth yet, either.

Does anyone have any advice (or solid tutorials) on unwrapping fairly complex objects?

Also, I wanted to know if anyone has come across a good solution for rigging up the skin between dragon wings. I intend to make the skin from NURBS patches, but haven't figured out how to animate it.

Thanks a bunch guys. :)

Aw he's so cute, Don't know where to crit besides maybe better defining the muscles in the back legs and giving him his wings webs so he can fly:D

Then I've done my job well indeed. It's a swampdragon from a Terry Pratchett book called "The last hero" with illustrations by paul kidby.

The only thing I left out in my rendition was the ears.

Can someone please explain to me how to set the bloody rest position of an object (eye) in an aim constraint?

For some reason, when I add an aim node to my eye, attached to a curve, the eye sets itself to 50, 90, 50 (or thereabouts).

Did anyone else notice that the new help system in maya 5 is terrible?

A small update:
http://free.hostdepartment.com/r/ramij/terry13.html

I've spent a lot of time cleaning up the mesh and merging the two sides so i haven't updated.. it's only things i'd notice.

Added a lot of definition to the musculature and added teeth. The mouth isn't finished yet (i'm tackling that now) and i've still yet to do the wings.

I've settled on a blend-shape solution for the animation of the wings.. i wish there was a better way to do this though.

you could use bones for the wings, hey I'v even used bones for ears :)

Another update.
http://free.hostdepartment.com/r/ramij/terry16.html

dded detail to the mouth: teeth. still no gums or tongue. :( spent my time with the belly scales. I like the way that the turned out. I guess it's time to stop jerking around and just fill in the mouth and wings and start texturing him.

i never know when enough tweaking is enough..

Isn't that book so cool?

I'd really like to model all the characters when I get a chance...

Actually, I only used the side angle. I'm working in Maya.

Pretty cool lookin' little dragon.

I'm working on a bigger one myself, though I've been rather lazy about it lately.

The way I did the wings was using curves, lofat a surface and then parent the curves to the bones, so the lofted surface stretches.

Of course you could always try rigging up soft bodies if you're crazy. It would look cool though.

That's the way I was going to do it. :)

I did a bit of research and noticed that on bats, the air flaps extend the entire length of the dragon. I wonder if it would be cool to do that for a dragon too...

That's a terrific design on the dragon, lots of appeal in the build and the facial features. Though it kinda creeps me out that he only has two toes on each foot. :-)
