View Full Version : July: Animation Mini Challenge

Splinter
07-01-2009, 02:51 PM
This month's Animation Mini Challenge is: Watching a scary/funny movie

Use your time wisely everyone. We have a whole month ahead of us, so start planning your setup. I hope to see something soon from everyone.

For anyone who doesn’t know of a site to host their WIPS I suggest trying Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/) or Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/). They are both very reliable video hosting websites and most people have access to them.

The Rules Are:

Make all the WIPS in Playblast form, then if you choose you can create your final piece in a more robust renderer (NOT necessary, you can still post the final with a playblast).
All animations should last at least 10 seconds long, that way there will be more clarity with what is going on.
All animations should last NO longer than 12 Seconds. Even I am guilty of creating an animation that lasts exceptionally long.
All participants must show there work-in-progress before posting the final.
Congratulations to MrMike for being the first Animator to make it into the "WINNERS" Circle (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=5958948#post5958948).

Nice ! Thanks Splinter.

We can upload WIP here itself, or will you create a separate thread for that !

Now onto some brainstorming for ideas....

Cheers!

Nice ! Thanks Splinter.

We can upload WIP here itself, or will you create a separate thread for that !

This thread is where we will post our WIPs, critiques, and finals. All I ask is that you let everyone know if the animation posted is a WIP or final. That way I will know at the end of the month which animations are eligible to be nominated for the "WINNERS" Circle.

This one should a fun one. And it will test me to the max I think.
Man I really like these Challenges and how you and other people are working towards the same goal and learning a ton along the way.

Not sure how much time I will have to work on this one but I think I can get some time in out it this weekend.

Good luck to all and happy animating

ok, i will try to stop asking with this frequency, but i read the rules for this month, and i think just 2 second between the minimum and maximum time permited will be a little hard for everyone to achieve

it could have a small increase in the maximum? if not for this month may be for the next...

and i liked this month idea, i think that will be a lot funny to make the animation and to search references =]

ah, the forum "questions" is written "quesions"

I understand what you mean Vidotto, but in my experience and with others, we usually tend to strive for longer durations, but in the end we eat more than we can chew.

The frame limit for this session of 240 - 288 frames is not less at all. Try doing the best you can and a lot depends on planning and you will be amazed thats its a LOT of frames. You may also end thinking, there are far too many frames to fill up.

Trust me, I used to keep increasing the frame limit not too long back, but it didn't in anyway make it look better, rather became more complex.

Just my 2 cents of thoughts !

Cheers!

I think 10 seconds should be enough time for us to put in plenty of detail. I don't want anyone to get too far ahead of themselves by putting in too much. By keeping the min and max to a minimal amount of frames this not only challenges you but gives everyone a higher chance of completing and an opportunity to be nominated for the "WINNERS" Circle.

As for the questions thread I missed that, thanks for giving me the heads up on that. I am dating some one who was an English major and she gets a twitch in her eye when she sees my writing :rolleyes::shrug:. So I understand how irritating that can be. Although Im not a Moderator so don't know if I could actually edit the title of the thread, but I will see what I could do.

Thanks again you guys, for helping me stay on my toes.

Alright I got my scene all set up I think i might add a picture on the wall to finish it up.

I am going to do a scary movie for the animation
I am going to get planing it out and do some storyboarding
Because we all know that is good right.

Plan out the shot very well and then you are all set up for a win.

Here is a screenie of my scene.

what is the policy of audio with this contest? can we add our own, or do we have to keep it on mute?

first time poster here.

what is the policy of audio with this contest? can we add our own, or do we have to keep it on mute?

Well, since this is a pantomime exercise, it doesn't have any dialog per se. I guess you are free to add sound effects, if you feel it will contribute to the overall scene.

Hey guys I just finished putting my scene together. I have a pretty good idea what the animation is going to be like as well. Hopefully, I can get to work on the blocking real soon.

This picture was rendered with lights and shadows put in. Hopefully by the time the animation is complete there will be enough time to go back and render it like this again. From here on out I will only be using the Playblast command.

I think that I have some really nice "Feng Shui" going on here. :buttrock: I am going for a scared reaction in my animation. I still have some plotting to do.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k216/Johnc_Ism/Animation%20Session/julySetup.jpg

MrMike - I really like your start. I can feel that there is some thing scary getting ready to happen in the scene just before it happens. You have planned it out really well. I am really excited to see what comes next.

citizenvin - Awesome rig choice!!! just looking at him alone makes me want to laugh. Your poses look solid. In my opinion coming up with really well thought out key poses is the majority of the battle. Keep up the good work.

See you all later...

MrMike
07-08-2009, 10:46 PM
@citizenvin

I am using mental ray for when I do the final animation pass.

For all of my blocking and almost finish passes I will be using the Playblast as Splinter said in his post.

Just use Playblast within Maya, I have it to render out a .avi so then I have a movie file of my rough animation.

@Splinter

Nice job on setting up your scene. Really like how you have the shadows and the glow of the TV. Can't wait to see what you have cooking for the animation.

Thanks for the encouragement, Yeah I really planed this one out and did some video of myself for reference and even do some thumbnails. I am really trying my best to make sure I do all that I can to make it the best that I can.

@Everyone

Keep up the good work guys, I hope everyone finishes there animation this month so we can all see each others work.
I have been reading Animation Mentor's Tips and Tricks eBook (http://www.animationmentor.com/tipsandtricks2/) the past few days and there is some great stuff in there so you guys should check it out if you haven't.

Happy Animating

Good to see this thread gathering steam and people chipping in with their stuff.

@Splinter@MrMike - good start !

@Splinter - I like what you have in there, but I wont make it too dark the overall lighting and specially for the face, as we don't want to miss the facial you will put in. Also why not push your limits, instead of having a scary theme already built in with the lights and colors, why not let the animation itself be scarier enough. I know its not easy for sure, but thats the real fun right, the animation itself saying it all. Think about it.

@citizenvin - I suggest you upload a playblast as that would be realtime and in 24 FPS, I am not sure what kind of format you have now. I would improvise on the staging a bit. Have something like what Splinter/MrMike have where atleast the TV is shown to immediately understand whats happening in the scene. The "world" where the scene happens is super important for the audience to get some connection instantly. Right now your staging doesn't tell me anything about whats happening.

You also need to hold poses. Right now its just going from pose-to-pose, without any meaning. Remember animation is not moving an object from A to B, but how its moving which is super important. I would suggest, first shooting a video reference yourself, put some comedy stuff on your screen, and just hit the record button. You will be amazed at what all happens when you just observing yourself. Planning is the key to animation. A movie is made in the planning stage and not at the execution stage.

So get the key poses in there first, poses which will tell exactly whats the entire scene is about, and then after go with the breakdowns to define the movement between the poses. As MrMike mentioned, get the ebook and also visit the Animation Mentor blog also.

@MrMike - I think you on a good start as of now. I totally understand its just the first stage of blocking. A few things -

I would do away with the camera move. To me, its not contributing anyway to the scene.
Try adding some change of facial expressions to show that he is getting more scarier and also to add some contrast. Escalation is very important to add momentum and pace. Right now the face remains same thru out.
First 48 frames, around 2 secs, there is nothing happening which makes the scene dead. See if you can add some poses right away, to keep the character engrossed and alive in what he is doing.
Hand poses are in symmetry almost all the time in the scene. The first pose, then when he puts his hand on his mouth, then right before he jumps, both the hands are doing exactly the same thing.
I think your acting choices can be more judicious. Leaving the first pose, all poses doesn't make it look like he is scarier. Also the poses are over exaggerated. I am all for pushing our poses/ideas but over doing it just kills the essence of it. Last few poses doesnt add much to the theme of the scene. What I would suggest is do a mix of subtle and exaggerated poses to add contrast. If you do only either, it will kind off make the scene dull.
As mentioned to "citizenvin ", doing some video reference is very useful. Study it as much as you can. See the little nuances, the little subtle things going on. I am always surprised when I observe myself in the video, there is so much I can miss without the video reference.

I guess thats all for now.

Good luck to all !

P.S. - Animation is very subjective, we all have our ideas when we approach a scene. So my feedback may be totally out of sync with what you have in mind. So please feel free to discard all the feedback I mention. I would say be open to feedback, but use your own discretion and filter the feedback accordingly.

@Freakbaba

Thanks a ton for all the feedback.

Yeah i was a little unsure on what to do about the camera, because he moves out of frame when he comes up on the sofa.
Ok yeah I worked a little more on the face last night and you can see a little bit of change now with my new video I will put up on the end of this post.
I thought the hands needed some work and I wanted them to be more offset.
I will work on the poses, with subtle and exaggerated, but I like how get gets up on the sofa and I am not sure how much time I will have to work on him, so I might have to stick with this idea of how I have it.
@Everyone

I had some time to do some more work on my animation getting it smoother and I will try and add some more things into after reading @Freakbaba feedback. I am having a lot of fun with you guys and seeing everyones work come together. Keep it.

Hello all,

This is my first animation session and just today I was able to do a first round of blocking. I had something a bit different in mind for a person watching a scary movie, so hopefully that comes through. Models will be added at a later time, and ideally once the month is complete I can do a full scale render.

Vidotto

gcr113 - you said that you finished but there is some things that i think could improve your animation

first, i think its a little dark the lightining setup

about the moves, you could pay more attention to the tweened time, most of the moviments starts/end in the same frame

for example, the first move, when he sit with the 2 feets on the floor, both arms and the foot hit the final position in the same time, you could make the feet come first, the one arm and the other before

you could use more moves in arc too, i fell the hands going straight to the pose and not making the pivot in the elbow and shoulder

and other thing, but this is hard to make at this time, you could use more the body to make the moviments, he is using only the abdomen to lift, in the second 5 i think is a little exagerated. may be if he uses the arms to help the lift would be more natural

other thing, i promise i will stop =], but in youtube your animation is with 9 seconds, the rules is for 10 to 12 if im not wrong, you could use that hiding behind the sofa that was in your blocking

yours slow in/out are very well made, i liked a lot

Like Vidotto said, we have talked about the animations being soundless. This helps keep the judging on even playing grounds. We don't want to take attention away from the animation. So if you would please post your final without sound.

On a side note, Mike your animation is really awesome. Thanks for sharing with everyone.

I thought you might say something about that, but I wasn't sure.

So I am uploading it again with no sound.

Here is the link when it is done getting up on Vimeo.

MrMike - Sorry I really did like the sound work that you put into the animation. I just don't think that it would put everyone in the same ball field if some have sound and some do not.

Thanks for understanding. Later...

@Splinter

Its all good man. I just like to finish out my animations all the way with a render and sound. But I understand with everyone not getting that far and such, so its not as fair.
I am glad I had the time to get to the render and sound.

Hope you are able to get yours done.
I like where it is going

Here is my final version for this month. I ran out of time so there are some things I'd like to have spent more time on, but I'm out of time. Unfortunately, the video turned out really dark on vimeo for some reason. I'll upload it to youtube and see if that helps.

i need to say that i am loving the way that this animation sessions is going, i think that competition thing is attracting more people and it tends to get bigger each month

this month will be the first voting and im happy to finish in time with a lot of other animations, good luck for all and thanks for the opportunity

about mine animation, i tried to use some maya dynamics and it was a pain for 3 days, i got a lot of erros and that versions its not perfect but i think its ok

i have some things that i want to change but there isnt time for that

the video is in http://www.vimeo.com/5850920

There will be a poll on August 1st in a new thread. I want to make sure that everyone has a chance to make the deadline. The poll will have the name of every animator who has completed there animation. Then under that I will make a post that will list each animator and a link that will guide you to each completed animation. I will allow only three days for voting, please make sure your vote is in before 11:59 PM on August 3rd.

Good Luck to everyone!!!

Sorry everyone it has been a really busy start for this month. But I am working on everything now and hopefully everything will be up real soon. I will allow 3 days for the poll. I just hope that everyone made the effort to let it be known that the animations for last month were completed. I will make a conscious effort to see if the animation in this thread are finalized or if they are WIPS.

Thank you everyone for your patience.

The Audio file is now ready for download in this months Challenge thread.

about the wips, almost everyone posted wip videos, only nagypeti posted some pictures 2 days before posting the final animation

the forth rule sais:
All participants must show there work-in-progress before posting the final.

i think its up to splinter judge what is a work-in-progress

very good post you made vidoto, nice to see all our final works.. how about the poll.. ???

MrMike
08-05-2009, 04:55 AM
Yeah a poll would be nice because if it was up on the 1st today was the last day to vote for the animations of July.

I guess Splinter has been busy but its nice that you did this Vidotto. Maybe it will save Splinter time for setting up the poll. I know how we can all get busy with other stuff. Its just life.

I am going to watch through everyones animation now.

I am really sorry to everyone who have supported this challenge. It really is tough trying to find time this month. Hopefully everything will smooth over for me soon. I will be jumping on the poll for last month right now.

Thank You Vidotto for all your help.

AND don't worry I don't plan on letting this challenge die out anytime soon.
