Thanks,
can't wait for the hopefully very detailed tut
well, i've estimated that if a cover all aspects of it such as interior/texturing/rendering, it will come VERY close if not over 100 pages.
if thats not detailed then i have no idea what is...

Looking GR8 so far!! When do you anticipate having it completed?
Ive been modeling odds and ends for a while now but I REALLY want to get into modeling cars. I think this tutorial would be a great for doing just that.

you mean put what i've done so far up and then just update it with the new stuff?
sounds good! but i would have to get the hosting sorted out, i have had some offers but getting the files to them would be a pain, i'm still on a dial up (56k) i'm not able to get broadband untill mid september.
i suppose i could send the file to my brother on disk, and then he could upload it.....
here's a slight progress:
here (http://www.geocities.com/will3d1988/tut_wip_02.html?1059479272338)
mirror:
here (sorry aboput the adds) (http://unknown.fcpages.com/tut_car_02)
just over 15 pages, and 115 pictures.
i can tell you, writting this makes you realise how much effort goes into modelling a car (or anything alse for that matter),
it's just when you're so used to it you kind of zoom through it and not think as hard about everything, your brain sort'a does it all automatically. (well, thats what i've found anyway...)
Cheers,
Will

I would like to say it's nice to see another full car tutorial, but I can't. People are begining to rely WAY way to much on full tutorials.
Not to knock you from finishing the tutorial though, I'm glad that people are willing to share their skills.

but surely you're supposed to learn from a tutorial so you can implement all the stuff into your own model!!?
that was definitely the reason why i wrote this. it was not so people could have a decent model of a bmw, but so they could then go onto modelling there own car.
But what do you mean be rely? people dont follow a tut just so they have a finished model at the end, thats just a bonus. they follow the tut to learn new skills. (well thats the usual case)
the way to learn stuff is by doing, and unless you're just going teach yourself through trial and error (and thats pretty hard, trust me, i've been there. many months did i spend trying to model cars accurately, when i could have just read through a few tuts and learnt the proper ways of doing it) a good accurate tut is the way to go.
you guys want to learn from this right!!????
but please share why you think/know that is the case.
if i thought people wren't going to learn anything from this i would stop right away, there would just be no point.
Thanks anyway:thumbsup:

you're supposed to learn from a tutorial so you can implement all the stuff into your own model
YES!! I wish more people would think that way!! Thats what tutorials are SUPPOSED to be used for.
But I get emails, AIM messages, and people coming up to me asking me all the time "make a tutorial for a _________", and that ____ always has a different object in it.
If I were to make a tutorial for a Chevy Corvette, I would get people asking me for a tutorial on a Chevy Impala, and a Chevy Cavalier just well. It just doesn't seem to stop.
Maybe I feel this way because I am self taught, and there wern't NEAR the amount of tutorials 5 years ago as there are now.
Don't get me wrong, tutorials are great, and a very good way to learn, but people are using them for a crutch. they don't want to take just a little time to try and model something on their own, or try to figure out ANYTHING by them self. the first thing they do is ask for a tutorial.
Please prove me wrong!! I am probably just to closed minded.
Please don't take this in the wrong way! (email me if you want to discuss it further, I don't mean to invade your post)

Error404, please think about it like this. If only a few people out of say a hundred who read through this tutorial use it to pick up good modelling skills and efficient workflow methods which they carry on to other projects, then that is surely worthwhile? I know I for one will find this tutorial extremely useful for picking up exactly those skills. I'm still on the steep part if the learning curve with this whole 3D thing (I've just started a WIP thread on my first car) and tutorials like this are exactly what have accelerated my learning beyond what I thought possible.
I find it astonishing the number of useful tutorials you can find nowadays. Saying that, I sometimes digress about the arrogance of some people, requesting that that someone like yourself who has obviously put MANY hours of your own time into writing a tutorial, only to have someone come back to you asking if you can do another one with another model car/package, I can understand your anger, particularly given the extent of literature now available.
Please don't get disheartened because although some will abuse the system, I can assure you that not everyone who has gone through your's or potentially unknown limits tutorials will merely use them as a crutch.
I'd just like to thank you and unknown limit for putting the time in to help people like me. I and many others really appreciate the time guys like you put in to share your wealth of knowledge with people like myself.
Your post has just brought your own tutorials to my attention and they look fantastic. I use Max and LightWave and it looks like the principles can be ported to LightWave as well.
Unknown Limit, this tutorial is looking gob-smackingly good as well.
