View Full Version : UV Coordinates
Keyframe3D 07-26-2003, 05:43 PM Hi.
In UV Coordinates, if U represents horizontal, and V represents vertical, then why isn't it called HV Coordinates?
Thanks.

Because they are co-ordinates in a different representation of space, in a way. Just like we have X, Y and Z the corresponding texture co-ordinates are U, V and W because they still represent projection within 3D space. And because of the the way that 3D space can behave, horizontal and vertical become a bit useless since things can get kinda topsy turvy :)

Okay. But why the letters U, V, and W? Why not A, B, and C? Just curious.
Thanks.

you can ask same question for why it is xyz then... no reason i guess..:hmm: just most common letters used by mathematicians... like main vectors that represent euclide's 3d space are ijk.. but can be every other letter...

I understand now. I was confused because I thought V was an abbreviation for vertical. So then I was trying to figure out what U stood for. Umbrella? Ugly? Ulcer?
Bye.
