View Full Version : Map type?
Aleizter 06-29-2009, 01:28 AM Okay, new guy here. I am just learning 3DS, and my beginner level books don't cover mapping much. So here's my questions. If I am making an old rusted gear, and I want the less weathered areas to have more shine than the rusted and weathered parts, what map type would I use? Where would I find a good tutorial or best book on such a map?

That depends on a number of factors, like which material you'll be using (which is primarily dictated by which renderer you'll be using).
If you're using the default scanline, you'll probably be using the Standard material, in which case the map you want is "Specular Level"
If mentalray, you'll want a black and white map inside the reflection color on the Arch / Design Material..
Or if you want to make a seperate rust material ontop of your original metal material (like if you're using a blend material, with a mask) then just make sure that the two material have the correct specular response you're after, and the mask you're using the blend between the two material will do the rest.

I was leaning towards specular, just not very sure. Looks like I need to study a bit more on the materials side as well. Probably getting way ahead of myself. Thank you for the information. Excellent portfolio sir.
