Hi Everybody!

So this is my first thread on cgsociety … kinda nervous :D.
Had not the courage to post some of my work, but now it’s time to jump into the cold water.

This is going to be a w.i.p. – thread because I won’t get better by just painting on my own. So I would like to share my progress with you and hope to get as much feedback and help as possible. I am seeing this as a chance to bring my painting to the next level.

I like ice and snow mountains a lot and got really inspired by the Picture “We found the gate to Hell” by Christer Wibert … stunning work. -> http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=709166

So lets get started.

Oh and I am sorry if my English sometimes isn't right. I hope you will forgive me :D

I started on a small resolution to get some rough idea … now I am on 2400 * 1200 but painting on 25%.
I am not sure where this picture is going, so this is where I am right now :

Continued painting ... tried to make it more interesting with the man seeing the cave...
Background is still missing. Hope you like the progress.

hmm... I think now you just need to start sharpening the image so we can see where you're headed with it. Also, personal preference, I think I prefer the composition of your first sketch. Might want to try to add more color into it also. I understand that it's very desolate location, but if you look at the "we found the gate to hell" you'll notice he's using different (albiet very muted) colors all over it! Blotch some color in and see where it leads you. BTW, I am really liking that figure sort that is coming through in your second image, I'd love to see that develop into more of a focus.

but anyways I will enjoy seeing where you take this, keep it up.

I agree with ferret king. The dark area on the left had a nice low frequency contrast with the right. In the new version that contrast it's removed and it has become fairly homogeneous with medium frequency detail. The focus on the cave has also been lost.

One way to handle this and still keep the character would be to replace the dark area in the first area with the silhouette of the man's upper body as this would still portray the man seeing the cave. It would also help the illusion of depth by giving your painting a strong foreground element.

I tested how i could bring the focus back on the cave and the low frequency back on the left side. So i made the man and his surrounding bigger. I am not quite happy with it at the moment.
Inserted some mountains in the background but need to seperate them more from the foreground.
Will try to add more color in the next update.

@ velenosangue : Tried to make the silhouette of the man in the front ... but hasn't worked that well... ( maybe because of my painting ... :/ ) Maybe i can increase the man even more..

Changed my composition a little, but i think it works better this way.

Made the cave smaller so it appears further away, also added some rough idea of fog into the background. Its difficult to make fog if your mountains are white ... maybe someone can give me a hint.

Hi sNeb,

Looks good. Your previous update was a bit iffy, but your current one works the best so far for me.

As for the fog problem, putting rocks behind it is the way to go. Looks like you've already been trying this.

Hey guys !

Changed my computer to a 64 bit system. So hadn't that much time to paint. Here is the current state of my picture. Most time i defined more of the rocks and the snow/ice.
Will add the man later in .. wasnt happy with his body.
I think i keep the composition and go on with details. Also have to give the background more time.

@velenosangue : thanks for your comment!
