Hi guys, here is a work that I have been working on for a long time... She is a ballet dancer (original photo was found from google)...

I wanted to paint this well so that it could be included in my portolio for a game job. but somehow there is just something that doesn't look right. My friend said it looks like a grade-2 drawing :(

Please, any commnet and criticism is highly appracieted! I really want to improve myself!

for me it looks good so far, If you can submit ref you used it will be easier to find what's wrong- without it, it looks quite ok for me.
Since it's a WIP it's hard to predict what you finished at this stage and what will be pushed further but I would try to make her shoulder and arm musculature softer- I know ballet dancers have strong muscles but in that sort of painting smoother shapes would give the dancer more delicate appereance- something that ordinary person like me imagines when thinking about ballet :)
Second thing is erm.. skirt (i hope this is the word :) )- giving it more form even at early stage can greatly influence overall appereance, try to push it further and see if it affected the person you are drawing.

I hope my english wasn't all that bad and you understood something from my yak-yak, show us some more :)

SebastianZ, thanks very much for your useful comments! You are right-the lack of details on her skirt makes her body look "seperated":p

And yes, I agree that her mussles look a bit too strong right now, hehe. Will work on that to make her look nicer. :D

Here is the reference image that I am using... Looking forward to more critiques from you!

I'm noticing some differences between the ref and yours right in the area of her left leg. On the ref photo, it is lean, and sweeps in one direction. On yours, the thigh is thicker (more powerful-looking, but less graceful) and the calf juts out much more severely. On the photo, the inner line of her left leg is nearly straight, with some small, gentle curves. If you're going for an image just like the ref, consider revising that whole area.

Otherwise, you've really captured a lot of the pose well. Keep going.

its a good start, definitely. I agree with saralyssan, her thigh is a bit too thick.

what makes a ballet dancer so desirable and pleasant to look at is their fluidity. their smooth rounded forms and elegance overall. the upper half definitely demonstrates this, however, I'm gonna make a suggestion that you slightly modify your version from the reference.

Her left leg looks like it bends a little bit, which it does in the reference, straighten this leg out and really make it stand tall. also, try to point the toe on the right leg instead of giving it that right angle. really emphasize that ballet form and give it that elegant point of the toe and stretch of that leg.

also, keep in mind the finesse of a little girl as well. she is definitely muscular, but not adult muscular, shes still petite!

this looks wonderful, I look forward to progress :D

Saralyssan and Auria, thank so much for the comments from both of you! You are definitely right - her left thigh is of the wrong shape! And the point that the girl is only a child is very important, too. I should have kept this in mind, but somehow I just forgot about all this when I drew... :p

I will update very soon, looking forward to your advices!

Wow! This is going to look fantastic! Keep going :-)

I know its a work in progress but I just wanted to comment on her hands. They seem a bit strong and and quite masculine. Perhaps avoiding overshading in that area may help? Also there seems to be a bump on her right shoulder thats a bit out of place.

You are probably aware of these points however. Can't wait to see the final result :)

Karan123, many thanks for your comments! You are right, I do need to work on "relaxing" her mussles. Somehow this always seems to be a problem to me, I guess it's because when I draw something I would like people to see my efforts...... but now you made me realize that the real effort lies in how to make everything work in harmony. I will definitely try to improve on this aspect.

The weird bump on her shoulder... that's actually her joint, er, at a wrong spot :p Thanks for pointing that out!
