Hi everyone! :wavey:

Amir has asked me to breathe some life back into this thread and I'll attempt to keep the updates rolling through the remainder of the challenge. :)

As Amir has posted earlier, we are entering as a team, and our efforts are geared towards the submission of a film trailer in the "flashes of iconic imagery" style, featuring the integration of live action and CG/VFX.

Most of our team members are animation and film students at the SAE Institute in Dubai, UAE. We anticipate varying levels of contributions from our team members; from the singular production of minor assets to more expansive and multifaceted work - we intend to spread the load across as many willing and able-bodied individuals as we can afford in order to meet the requirements of our shot list (to be posted shortly).

We see this challenge first and foremost as a learning opportunity and look forward to sharing our work in progress as well as regularly keeping up with all the great work being produced by the other teams. :)

Our current member list (as of July 25th; to be updated as required):

Amir Jahanlou - Project lead

Live action team:
Abdullah Al Nasrawi - actor; secret agent
Ahmed Al Suwaidi - live action crew
Akash Kingston Louis Gilbert - live action crew
Catherine Philpott - photography and make-up

Rene - camera operator
Sangeetha Sudarshan - make up
Sohail Pourdaryaei Nejad - location scouting, live action crew

Farzad Farhad - 3D artist; modeling, lighting and shading
Jorell Benitez - 3D artist; modeling

hello everyone, i think this is the first time i am updating this thread, so far Varun (my colleague) has been updating in here, i attached one new snapshot of the Bike (modeled by Farzad Adalatnia and Maryam Hassanpour, and rendered by Farzad)...... we are almost done with our shooting sessions, i think another 4 days of shoot and then we start the effects work, for this particular trailer we are trying to lean mainly towards the VFX such as fires, matte paintings, explosions and compositings.......

if all gos well on the shoots, i will start the 3D work myself as of Sunday 26th and then we updae this thread with more fires and flames.....

thank you all for viewing our thread and thanks to all members of our team..

Hmm, that drawing/poster should have been submitted under the Storyboards / pre-visualization category.... let's just say it's undercover in the WIP category for now. :p

I believe Amir might be posting more images along those lines; will check in with him on that.

I can, in the meantime, give you a heads up on the literal "back" story of the agent's wounds in that image, via a series of shots showing the WIP of the make up sessions (coming up shortly). ;)

well, we are doing everything we can to keep the whole team motivated, it kind of tough because at the beginning everyone seems rather excited, but when the real work starts and the complexity of it starts showing up, that's when you get people dropping out one after another, i certainly hope that won't be our future in here........ thanks for the support

Hey Dave, no pressure, right? :D

That previous post is by Amir - and, as you might be able to tell, the magnitude of work isn't exactly lost on him, haha.

This is a pretty intense stage as we're trying to wrap up a lot of cg assets as soon as we can, with the standard of work across everything requiring us to push our abilities further than we have before. We aren't actually seeing people dropping like flies as Amir's post would have you believe, but keeping people driven to produce this stuff while being full time students/full time employed individuals is certainly a challenge, as has been pointed out earlier.

Amir, deep breath! I'll try and have a bunch of cg updates ready for this thread by Saturday.

And as in the previous post, thank you all for your support. As you all know, the comments and feedback are what keep the momentum going, so cheers for your help in keeping the machine rolling!

@ jaras: Yeah, at least we can't be faulted for a lack of ambition, eh? http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon10.gif ;)

Thank you for your wishes. It's evident that all the teams here are putting in an exceptional level of effort into their work; we are both, inspired, and motivated by the stuff we see here on a daily basis.

On a side note, we did run into a tiny hiccup (gross understatement) when one of our actresses pulled out, haha. That's necessitated re-shooting a few shots, adding to the agitation of our project lead. The good news is that we are on track to remedy this with a new schedule. Updates will follow, as always.

@ tokanohanna: I imagine that Man will be beaming upon reading your post. Cheers and good luck with your entry; will be checking in on your updates as they come in.

Why is the gun cg? Can't you get a toy gun and paint it black? Or is it a big part of the story/close up to the camera? Looking very cool, you guys are working hard!

saeDubai
07-25-2009, 06:47 AM
Hey Dave, good question!

We have a shot of the gun flying extremely fast through the air as it is thrown by a member of the main cast to the agent, who catches it and starts firing.

None of the live action trials were giving us the results we needed, so we will have a shot of the CG gun on the fly and cut to the agent once he's caught it. ;)

We were initially planning to use live footage for this shot, but it turned out to be impossible with our equipment, so now we are doing a portion of the city (Dubai) in 3D, i wouldn't worry much about the rendering as it is a stylized shot.

You have a good start there!
It looks more like a volcano erupting than something exploding because you have the fuel ignition (the bright spots) on the outside of the effect. Try making the fuel ignition happen on the inside of the effect. Just make their hotspots at the backs of the trails instead of the front :)

Good motion on the shockwave dust.
Can you get any more detail out of the smoke itself? It looks a little soft right now...

But again, good start!

hey..

you are certainly right about the volcano effect, it's just at this point the amount of work ahead of us is really overwhelming, i am gonna try to fix this one sometime between the other shots, one major problem is, i don't really have that much experience or knowledge with these type of effects, i mean i neither know their behavior properly, nor i have simulated this before, .... (sigh).......
still trying.....

thanks for the input though....

Well the colors going from the reddish to the grey on the trails must be coming from some kind of ramp. A start would be to simply reverse that color ramp and see how it looks!

Very impressive scene. The car movement and the slow motion part is perfect. The only thing I dont like is destruction of the bridge tower. Its breaking apart unnaturally. I think that it would be much more realistic if it just crack at the bottom, where is the explosion, and then start to fall towards the camera. The tower looks very heavy and it loses its weight with this kind of destruction.

Cant wait to see this in full render.

Sorry about my bad english.

Hey,
It is looking good as all of your updates. The only comment I would have is that chain that holds the bed is too reflective.. looks like chrome. I think it should be more rough steal also the thing that chain is attached to.. that metal bit.. looks a bit thin and simple (and has sharp corner). Apart from that it is all good, light looks quite dramatic, which is good. I would blur those bars in the front by adding depth of field. Perhaps move bars closer to camera. Good updates. I like your entry.

Absolutly it stands out alot, I think normal mid grey blinn with minimum specularity and no reflectivity would be more than enough.

Very nice live footage! and, yeah, it's definitly quite ambitious to create that whole shot in 3d and make it realist. I hope others shots won't suffer from that!

I do have a question tho, how do you upload the video on the forum? Do you have to be a member to use the CGUploader? I think I missed something somewhere.

anyway, Keep up the good work! Really inspiring!

Hello
heres my opinion
- run steps look a bit too procedural, especially the last step before jump - maybe he should start his jum helf - meter later
- jump amplitude looks unnatural it looks like if he was sliding on a rope, he should be falling down a bit faster
-there's some bug with right hand animation time he's in the air

Hello
heres my opinion
- run steps look a bit too procedural, especially the last step before jump - maybe he should start his jum helf - meter later
- jump amplitude looks unnatural it looks like if he was sliding on a rope, he should be falling down a bit faster
-there's some bug with right hand animation time he's in the air

What you're doing here is BIG men. I wish you good luck
_BB

You are definitely right, it's just that, this is just the animatics, we essentially did this to get an idea of the shot and what it would need ( in terms of buildings and ...) the final shot (if we pulled it off) will be completely different, and will have a rotoscoped animation, let's see.....

I think it is a great shot. doesn't need more than that to get it going.
Even if you think it is not perfect, you can still make it outstanding.

I'd like to genuinely thank everyone for their comments and suggestions; it definitely helps keep the motivation level going - and with about two weeks to go and a fair amount to still complete, there can never be enough motivation!

The learning process continues... I see film trailers in a completely new light. :)

Hello

here is a test of our trailer's grading, I had to consider so many parameters to come up with the final grading, parameters such as the regional touch, the theme of the movie or even the quality of the footage we ha. I think this is almost our final grading, if you have any comments or opinions please let us know...

saeDubai,

The grading looks really good here. I so wished the camera to move in this shot but understand that you guys are just testing. Personally I would have increased the black levels just a bit more. Great work anyways!

It does look good and properly corrected.
I'd only check if blacks on helicopter aren't to greenish (comparing to building on the right which blacks seems yellowisch). I find this one from making this shot perfectly cohesive and natural.

such an ambitious project! I see so many assets and elements, how are you guys feeling about finishing with only 1 weekend left/10 days?

I find just managing everything is a full-time job! Your project, I think, is the biggest in scope, most shots, locations, etc, at least for a live action comp project. I'm impressed with the work that's been done so far, I'd like to see more animation and more shots, but I know how it is at this point, head down, focused on getting the work done! :D

Good luck I eagerly wait for your final!

EDIT: Oh and I wanted to say I've shown this around at work and people here are waiting to see your final too :D

well, you're certainly right about the managing part Dave, with less than 10 days to go, we have about 15 unfinished 3D shots, about 7 live actions, still to be shot (tonight, hopefully). music is half way and compositing ain't done yet either, to top all of that up, almost everyone in the team is pretty busy with other works as well ( office work and assignments).
So I imagine at this stage we have to be extremely organized to manage it .......
well, i better get back to finish something before my office work starts.

and oh, it's really motivating to know that you've shown our work to your work buddies......thanks :)

Well done.

One thing wonders me in general (not in context of your entry).
Quite a lot of people does live action trailers, I mean most of the footage is live action and than VFX added to it. I think that it should be other way around... all 3d with bits of live action added. I think that whole cgchallange is based on that concept.. it is CG Challange after all.
I would like to know what you (or other people) think of it.

Well Dariusz, I'd say .. and this is not on behalf of my team , It's just what I believe personally; In my opinion, Computer Graphics can be all the way from a full feature animation to a simple lens flare. In regards to the ratio between these two, I imagine the right measurement would be; by calculating the resources and time dedicated to either of the two; looking at statistics during Secret Agent project, we spent nearly 20% of our resources on our live footage and 80% on our CG effects. 70% of our shots have passed through a 3D application, whether to have a CG background, add an asset and sometimes to have a full CG explosion! 100% of our shots have passed through a compositing application and an extensive amount of time has been given to the final grading of each scene.

In general I believe, and once again this is just my personal opinion; that effects are there to enhance the shot and help send the message across, I don't believe effects are there to be the main star of the show, I think effects should help us tell the story, they shouldn't be "The Story".

Upon the same idea at the beginning of this challenge our team decided to go for a "visual effects" direction as opposed to a "feature animation". We are targeting a trailer with extensive use of visual elements on top of the live footage to help us tell our story.

Like you said.... I would like to know what others think here as well

hey man....
We actually hired a helicopter.... hehehe...... honestly we thought about that, and heli wasn't that expensive either, around 200 $ per hour.... but obviously we couldn't get permissions to shoot over the city .. so we ended up using stock footage, ....

Thanks, I am putting it all together, but still have few shtos to finish and some I haven't started yet. I have booked another day off of work this week just to work on it. And than there is sound etc.
Making of will be done over one night I suppose, so it can be a bit crude.
According to my plan I should have it finished on Wednesday night. Can't work on it on Thursday because of work during a day and Shakespeare theater play my wife and I are going to in the evening.
Last few day or rather nights will be hardcore.

If all else fail, you could always ask someone here and send him your file (I guess you could upload it on vimeo or whatever..it gives the viewer the opportunity to download the original file), then give your username and password to them and let them upload it for you.

Thank you Ishan (hearty congratulations on your win man!) and to everyone who's posted on our thread. This was our first CGSociety challenge and it feels great to have won an award. We're a few days late with this post, but we'd like to congratulate everyone who participated for making this event such an interesting and diverse experience, not to mention an incredible learning opportunity. We'd also like to thank the judges and the organisers for their time and efforts in making the challenge possible and seeing it through successfully.

It's been an inspiring and stimulating ride and we'll strive to learn from the experience and take our work to the next level in future activities (maybe another challenge?).

Thumbs up on behalf of the saeDubai team.

Best regards, Varun
