View Full Version : How to determine texture size
nepaligurkha 06-26-2009, 05:52 PM Hey,
I wanted to know how i should determine my texture sizes? I've struggled to understand this concept. I know, it really depend on how far away the surface is from the camera? Right? But is there some kind of rule of thumb. Because I don't want to unnecessarily bog down my renders with huge textures files that don't need to be so high in resolution.
Thanks,
Tabha

I usually follow the twice the largest res you'll see it on the screen rule. So if you'll see the object full frame, and your res is 1920x1080, then I'd make the texture at least 2k high.
But something else you can do is this, make every texture huge, like 4k, save them as psd files in photoshop (or any other prefered format). Then save 1k versions of all the textures, load these into max. Then, when you do your render tests, you'll notice that a few of the textures may be too low res. In which case, go back ans save out larger textures from your 4k originals just for those objects. It's less automatic, but it's a decent way to make sure your textures aren't unnecessarily large.
Remember, it's always easy to take a large texture and make it smaller, but not the other way around, so always have a larger texture in your back pocket.
