I saw this today on Microsoft's site. Looks like you can choose your own retailer too.

For all those Windows 7 fans, now's your chance to get Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for $99, or Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for $49. Cheers!

Is this upgrade good for XP as well?

Found this in the FACs at M$:
I am running Windows XP, can I upgrade to Windows 7? (http://forums.cgsociety.org/)

Microsoft designed Windows 7 Upgrade media for Windows Vista. A customer with Windows XP can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade media but must back up their files, clean install, and then reinstall their applications.

SO is the answer YES? LOL

Actually, the UK (and the rest of Europe) get an even better deal :

http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/buy/offers/pre-order.aspx

Althought the pre-order starts later (July 15th) it's £49 for Premium or £99 for Proffesional.
The difference is, that unlike the US offer, these are full licenses not upgrades, so you have a retail copy that you can move from computer to computer as you upgrade or replace your machine.
Also worth noting is that the European editions must be a clean installation, not an upgrade over the top of Vista but you were going to do that anyway weren't you

In licensing terms Windows XP is eligible for a Windows 7 upgrade. In software terms though you have to do a clean install but you still get the discounted price for an upgrade license. Who uses the upgrade install anyway? Clean install is the way to go with any new operating system either way. Cheers!

I always do a fresh install on new OS- But you answered my question- If only I could afford a new PC- have to make do with what I have!

As someone who's still on XP64 and looking for a new workstation in the near future, should I just go straight to Win 7 or would it be unwise to go straight into a new OS and perhaps go with Vista until things have been ironed out?

My intention was to skip Vista completely and I've heard a lot of positive things about Win 7 but I'm not sure whether it's a wise move or not. Vista seems quite reliable now but I always got the impression that it was a stop-gap between XP and Win 7.

I have a feeling that Windows 7 is a stripped down/altered version of Vista- I've heard it (at work) referred to as Vista SP2. So it may be pointless to get Vista for that reason- some companies are offering the upgrade free from Vista so you may get both technically anyway.

I would go for Windows 7 Professional on a workstation if it were my call (or Linux of course!). Anything that runs on Windows Vista SP1 should run on Windows 7 because they have the exact same kernel and application framework, according to Microsoft. Same with drivers as well since the driver framework is the same.

In a sense its like Windows Vista since they share the same fundamental pieces, but streamlined and cleaned up. Windows Vista is half decent, not nearly as bad as everyone rants about, so Windows 7 should be respectable. Cheers!
