hi all,

i can understand a lot of people starting to make the switch to MB when comes to character animation. a few days ago i had a play with MB and it seems character rigging is a lot simpler and i think when it comes to character animtion, potentially it could also be less technical.

the question i'm asking is how does MB compares to character animation giants like your maya, softimage or even max?

well each of those will have there pluses and minuses, I use Lightwave and have found animating is slow. If MB was just faster and nothing else that would be good enough for me, but it does so much more, and the fact you start in your fav 3d app, and end up back there, its great.

mostly its fast and no matter how good any of the 3d apps are, probably Maya has the best animating features, you can't beat that realtime playback, i love it, can't wait for 5.

no more playblasts, or previews for me

The advantage of Motion Builder isnt that its 'better' than other packages, because it isnt designed to be a replacement for maya, lw etc. It is designed to work with the other packages.

As far as i recall motion builder began as Filmbox the tool for processing and refining motion capture. Because of this it excells at biped animation, the standard character rig included is exceptional and very easy to animate with. Once your animation is done you can bring it over to maya say and add all the bells and whistles you may want.

The realtime playback is amazing, something that would play at 5 fps in maya would be a smooth 60+ fps in motion builder.

It is very fast to work with, for instance you can create from scratch a walk cycle for a character in under 6 seconds.

I find it much easier to organise and bring together animation in MB than maya because the everything is geared to a nice nonlinear workflow. As apposed to maya where the trax can be a royal pain at worst and a annoyance at best.

I also cant wait for 5.

Agreed. The beauty of it is how it interfaces with your base package.

Also, at the price it's being offered, this is a no brainer for anyone looking to supplement their toolkit. I have only played with it for 1 day now, and I'm blown away.

MB5 looks like it's going to be something special. This is one of the few products I would recommend to just about ANYONE doing character work.

MB is great, but I think we should be aware that animation involves particles, fluids, cloth, soft and hard dynamics. So I think if you use MB, you still need to keep your base packages around for animation.
