If it is aligning to grid why don't use grid snapping.

Select all the points, turn the move-x manipulator handle on (become yellow), hold 'x', and snap all the points back to x = 0.

Just make sure that in your move tool setting "retain component spacing" is off.

It's depend what kind of special value you need.

If you need to align to existing vertex or cv use point snap, if you want to align to an edge or curve you could use curve snap.

But if you want to input directly the coodinate of this vertex use Component editor.

If you want to use relative from initial position you could also use CVs (click to show) from channel box.

If you are familiar with MEL, you could write down your own UI interface to do it.

I don't know if this is just me, but when I drag the handle, it doesn't snap, it only snaps when I drag the point where the handles meet:rolleyes:

You might be in local mode for the move tool, switch it to world.

yup, that solved it! Could you explain the differences bewteen these modes (local, world, object, normal)? My move tool setting was at object for example...

Also, dragging with the middle mouse button did nothing special (at least so it seemed to me). Whats it supposed to do?
