This is so freakin' amazing! I was preparing myself for a lack-luster Lightwave 8 release but now I'm absolutely blown away with the new features they're adding. Rock on Newtek! :buttrock:

PLA ( point level animation) ... oh my!!!

Mmmmm? We should maybe think about developing a Magnet tool to manipulate several vertices at once ... the operator made her look like she had bad implants after tuggin on a few.

Selection sets can be used too, although point by point was shown.

Curious about weight map creation Larry,,,, is this still a Modeler task?

My brains tell me it has to become a Layout feature

That will be in the smart breast plugin coming later :)

Well, Ill be damned!
Is that Modeler within Layout basically!?!?!

this looks like some sort of
point keyframe ability. Amazing tweaking control.

I hope they add the ability to hide stuff(user set groups of points maybe)

say lasso the area your working on so that only those points get highlighted, something like that. Something with a set and forget type of interface toggles or something.

hmm theres a smooth command in modeler

i wonder if this thing will include a feature to lasso a group of points and smooth them, or after a feature that after you move the point it smooths all the points around it (could be cool, could be a disaster for animations)

Just some ideas based on the small video .

but again i'd have to wait to see it more in action.

I can see work flow issues are probably a key concern for something this amazing. With so many points to play with could get lost in the clutter.

But wow, it certainly is a step in the right direction!!

I've gotta say...I was prepared for a disappointment with LW8, but all these sneak peeks are leading me to believe that this is going to be one hell of an update! I'm not going to go nutty 'til I see it in action first-hand, though. But hopefully it'll be as good as it seems to be shaping up to be.

It's pretty cool to see all that is taking place so far. And I guess we haven't even gotten past the tip of the iceberg yet. I better get cracking on learning what's already available so I'll have time to learn all the new stuff when it releases :)

Don't know why, but I was also thinking "boring" LW8 release. But this feels like getting shot out of a slingshot or something! Modeler becomes a Layout "utility"? Hee hee!!! :applause:

It's a shame, but it seems we now need to keep up with two (or more) forums to see all the goodies. No longer can I just pop in here and expect to see everything that I might miss elsewhere.

You don't need to follow more than one forum, the news eventually makes it way to all the LW forums eventually. If you don't want to wait for the news to trickle into this forum, just bookmark Newteks LW-Community forum, that's where all the news is coming from.

Wow! What's going on here? sounds like that damn spam viagra/hot girls/free sex email. They also felt that posting the thread with a title like that comes across a little as talking to the slow class.

I'm just the messenger on this one.

No offense taken. I normally wouldn't post a message with such a vague title. But I hold William Vaughan in the highest regard and count him as a friend. It was his post on the NewTek forum, and since he's a moderator here, I figured he'd eventually list it here as well. But I got too excited and couldn't wait to share. I just didn't want him to think I was callously oversteping my bounds.

Sorry for the confusing title. Chock it up to uncontainable LW8 excitement. :)

Cheers!

Steve

I really hope he still is a moderator, but after the last hot “flaming” weeks he said he wanted to quit his moderation “status”.
And damn I really need to say, there are more interesting Lightwave 8 threads on the Newtek forum !!!

But I always have at least two browser windows open, cgtalk, and newtek forum, it really sucks but damn I’m a news junky !!!

I'm surprised he has enough time to devote to moderating both forums and his main gig at Newtek. If he had to pull out of this forum it would be a shame but you can't be everywhere at all times.

No that was in response to the title of WV's original post "What's going on here?". I have to agree with her logic that posting something like that sounds more like spam than a real marketing move.

Steve, you did cgtalk a service by forwarding the link. My passing along a critique of the method of the original was what I posted. Someone obviously took offense and turned a little fanboy there.

takkun
07-28-2003, 07:24 AM
Sorry for getting all "fanboy" on you lwbob. :p

It's just I mistook your "critique" as a cheap shot at Proton and all about a minuscule detail of a thread title at that.:thumbsdow Comparing proton's thread to porn spam email is really in bad taste dude. You might want to consider changing your "fanboy" name, lwbob, as it seems you're more interested in "critiqing" proton's thread title then discussing or commenting on the very cool Lightwave features that were shown within.

Dr Dardis

That looks quite cool. I wonder what kind of tools there are to manage the animaion of points though... I would imagine that it would be a nightmare to keep track of all the keys...

I wonder also if you can do Mirai-like joint associations, so it would be possible to Lock those keys to the joint orientation at that time, and have that remembered, and stored as part of the dformation forthwith. Would be a faster way than smartskinning (also a powerful method of course :) ).

oh, well, all will be revealed I suppose, and a day earlier for those of us in Australia ;)

The Doc.

edit: Ps. Yay for proton, he works hard and is very friendly. I don't usually get involved in forum politics, but I just wanted to say cheers for his input over the last coupla years.

I posted that someone felt the TITLE of the post. Not the content of that one or all his posts. Reading what you want and bitching about what your imagination cooks up is in bad taste.

I relayed a message someone else message about the title and the style of the post. I'm sorry if you were offended at it being pointed out that you may be the retard helmet wearing audience that it was intended for. I was also relaying a message from someone that DID have a good point that isn't on the forum. Sorry that you needed to take it to flame levels.

LWbob don't feel too bad that what he is used to doing, Hey Takkun why is it that lwbob is a fanboy because of his name?
in 901 posts we have yet to see your stunning Lightwave talents
both here and on the Newtek forums. So Im starting to think, who is the real fan boy!:annoyed:

Time for you to show and prove if not don't be so quick to label people fanboy or for being dedicated to LW.:shame:

"LWBob" as opposed to "MayaJim" working here...It wasn't because I'm preaching in the "Church of NewTek"

So sad to see another thread degrade into flame wars and name-calling. Come on, guys...we were doing good for a while here...if you feel the need to bad-mouth each other, save it for the PM system. It's threads like what this one has become that give this forum a bad name. :thumbsdow

So, in an attempt to keep some semblance of being on-topic with this post, I'll say that I'm pretty excited to see point-level animation in Layout. This, along with the integrated Ortho tools, seem like they're really going to change the way a lot of people work. I can't wait to see what's going to be going on with the webstream tomorrow...which, in case any of you don't know yet, can be found here:

Anyone hear why the new viper preview QT got pulled?

Triple G
07-29-2003, 05:25 AM
Dunno....but I would've loved to have seen it. Viper's needed an overhaul for a while (no shadows, not displaying UV maps, etc.)...I hope they've made some significant improvements to it. Tomorrow should be an interesting day! (Well, today, technically...since it's now 12:36AM EDT) :D
