Hi there,

just a quickie in regards to HDRI reflections.

I have 2 spheres here, one with a Raytrace reflection set at 100, and the other with a reflection set at 2.

But both have stark specular areas. That is ok for the left hand sphere, but can I effect the specular of the right one to make it less prominent?

Well it looks like the effect you're trying to achieve is of a clear coat over a diffuse surface (like plastic or varnished wood). What you want to do is use fresnel on the reflections of that sphere with an ior of something like 1.5 as a starting point.

you could cheat it by clamping the hdri's higher dynamic range...

Less prominent is easy, (on the material, darken the specular color, or decrease the reflectivity as a couple of examples, or darken the color gain on the HDRI to affect the overall lighting), but for what reason?

Depending on the type of material you are tying to create, you would want to model your specular in a specific way. What type of material are you trying to create?
