EDIT: This turtle was made in Maya. If you are using a different software, see if it can convert over to Maya.
Hello,
I suck at rigging, so I'm hoping someone here with experience would take interest in rigging my character. You could definitely put it on your demo reel, and I might want to release the final version for free to the cg community. I'm hoping for a cartoon feel where this character can duck completely within his shell, and pop out individual limbs (incluing boots) as necessary. Not really wacky, but definitely toon. Modeling crits comments or suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.

Here is a link to the Wireframe of the character.

(oddly, you might have to right click and open it in a new window to see it)

It would be interesting to see any drawings with him bent forward and backward and sideways too. Have you thought how the shell would deform? or if it will deform at all?

I think I'll have him have some chemical compound within his system that allows him to harden or soften (parts of) the shell. While he'll probably never lay on his back (he'd have to kick himself up or spin to get off his back), he should be able to move just as fluidly as any other humanoid character.
Just picture someone wearing a big back pack and some front protective gear. Sides of the shell are soft and flexible. Front can be flexible as well. But when threatened, the entire shell can be hardened (and change texture, like darken or something) for protection.
I also wondered about making flesh openings for the top and bottom of the shell for him to slip in and out of. They'll won't be visible unless he completely goes in his shell.
I can't draw they well, but I'll try to post some pictures of what I mean later.

The above was done with lattices in order to test potential shell deformation solutions. Crits/comments/feedback welcomed.
