View Full Version : Vertex alignment: align vertices to a vertex
Sk0ll 07-25-2003, 03:23 PM hi!
I have searched the forum finding nothing that could help me...this is my problem:
I want to align a vertice to another's x-axis (sometimes I need to align more vertices). Is there a way to do this, or do I need a script maybe ?
This picture describes my problem:

just copy and paste the x value for that one vertex in the straight line and paste it to the one that isn't
hope that helps

Use the "align" tool. Within sub-object mode, grab the vert you want to move, select the "align" tool from the main toolbar, then select the vert you want to align it to. Use the "maximum" setting within the dialog, and then you can match the vert to X, Y, and/or Z location.
You can also use the "flatten" tools within meshtools(free script) to align a selection of verts to a specific axis.
You can grab it here:

Hope that helped.

for the options you guys just gave, wouldn't it be easier to just turn on snap and move the vert snapping to the one below ? :p
i think what he means is to massmove verts and mass-align them to the vert that is directly linked to them with an edge . . .

Aci|ix,
WOAH! it was that easy ! lol

I tried that, didn't work for me, I got wierd results :\

align vertices to a specific vertex's x, y or z axis, that is what I want to do :) (maybe u meant that, I don't know :D )

How about...
Select and Move, Restrict to XY, 3D Snap (option Use Axis Constraints).

Just out of curiosity, did any one of you guys tested extensively Snap in Max5? Because in other programs that I work with, Snap is a snap, and in Max it's kind of black magic... you never know what you'll get... in case it works at all...
I even don't want to get started on matters like "snapping object's pivot to some of it's vertices"....
So, I see a deep wisdom in using align, for example, instead of snap....
Please, tell me I'm wrong and give me a short "how to" on Max5 snap options. :p

Biggest limitation I have with Max's snaps is that they only work when Transform Center is set to Use Selection Center...

I personally am not a big fan of the snap action, but then again I'm no pro either.
What I do is just grab all the verticies I want to be on the same axis. For instance I would just draw a maque box around those 2 of the left for instance, it really shines when you grab 50 though. Put on non-uniform scale, then go down to the bottom of the screen and type "0" in the actual distance modfier, looks like x axis in your case. They should all allign themselves perfectly to the same axis. This is better for me because you can do them all at once instead of one at a time.
If that isn't clear let me know and I will send some screenshots of it in action. Works very good before mirroring or symetry modifiers btw.
