Is the object referenced into the scene? If so, use the original scene to make edits(if you have permission).

he's asking if you've used the Reference Editor to reference external files but if you don't know what he means, then you haven't. It would hard to do without knowing.

I get this problem too sometimes so I'd be interested in seeing if there's a fix. I think it might be a bug with Maya 2009 on OS X

That is an error you get when you try to ungroup with one or more of the individual object within the group selected. You need to select the group node. With the group node selected you can now ungroup all the objects with the ungroup function. To select the group node(s), select an object within the group, press the up arrow, and then slect ungroup from the pull down menu. sometimes you can have multiple groups under 1 group so make sure you have the node you want selected.

I don't have a project on hand that has this problem but I'm pretty sure I've tried that and it didn't work. As soon as stuff doesn't ungroup, I reach for the outliner.

Yeah tell us what the error is or exactly what happens when you try to ungroup or place it out of the group?

You may have much greater chance for help if you give step by step instructions how to reproduce your problem with a very very simple scene.
