Right After Effects seems to be crud at compositing Maya render layers/ passes so what next...

Shake is owned by Apple now and i don't want to buy a Apple just for compositing, or run Linux and pay 3x the amount for the program.

Digital Fusion seems the obvious choice (but is it still Maya integrated like when it was Maya Fusion?), also is it worth learning a very little used program?

Combustion seems to be all set up for Max, which i don't use, and i would prefer a node based system.

I've seen a lot of posts about these apps but nothing that really relates to specifically being a Maya user... any thoughts (sorry this is such a boring newbie type question)

what will your primary compositing work be? and at what formats, resolutions, and bit depths?

i dont know how integrated maya fusion was with maya in the past but it has no problems with mayas iff files with zdepth like combusiton does. I would recommed digital fusion over combustion if your going to need the zdepth info. Not to mention its alot more stable and handles memory better. But if your only going to be rendering out Tiff, tga or any files that doest have zdepth (cause maya rla isnt supported in combustion) Combustion should be fine.
the downside is DF is 5 times more then Combustion. :(
if your not going to be doing film work you might want to look at DFX+
