View Full Version : Computer Freeze

I was wondering if anyone might know what may be causing my PC to freeze and shutdown- I've dealt with Trojans and spyware in the past and am pretty sure that's not the cause- I initially had issues with the powersupply which is where I'm leaning now. Unfortunately my only other psu is old school and not compatible with PCIx (6 prong GPU cables). So could this be the cause-

This typically occurs when it is idling for a while. Then the Red blinking light (Think cooresponds with CPU Processes?) stops blinking altogether- fans continue running, screen freezes, mouse stays lit as well as keyboard- if the screen is in power saving mode then it won't come back on. Typically I reset and reboot.

All drivers up to date as well.

It would help to know the components :)
Insufficient PSU output on some lines can get the box to crash and fold, but without knowing what PSU and what it's trying to feed it's kinda hard to tell.
Also, is this a new box, so something like a faulty module is possible, or has it been running stable for a while before?

Blinking light would be hard disk access (no?)

so the operating system just say to you "shutting down"?

According to What I've been informed by Techs- it is the Hard Disk Access light and when it starts freezing it basically is having issues either accessing the HDD via the cable or the actual drive itself- THUS- I should back up data and get a new HDD- Thanks for your help-

Download an HD monitor. I recommend HD Sentinel, which only costs £20 for the full version. It tells you everything about your disks including temperature and expected time to failure. It logs everything that happens on your disks and alerts you to any problems. Seriously good s/w

Thanx but I have backup drives and will get a new boot drive and reinstall software- I've been needing a clean install anyways and might as well switch to Windows 7- Time is approaching to get a new PC---- HDD are a dime a dozen just wasn't sure if something else was the matter
