Here is a page of my notes, a sketch, and a colour test - all for the fleshing out of the style I plan to use for the finished piece. The style is inspired by cartoons from the 40s, 50s and 60s. It is intended to feel familiar, because deep down I seem to know that spies, at least the bad ones, are all short men in black (or dark) trenchcoats with sinister green (or white) faces and shifty eyes.
This is the basic character design, but nothing like what I imagine the composition will be. What do you think so far?

This is a work-in-progress composition that I've already given the scrap. I would've filled the area with spies participating in all sorts of "dirty tricks". I changed the composition to the one in the next entry because I felt it was too spaced out and becoming too much about the environment and less about the charcters.

This is a rough sketch of the final composition. The characters have gone from a dining car to a packed subway-like train car.

Line drawings. Defining the shapes of the main characters.

Brilliant. Truly evokes the style of old spy cartoons.

Thanks Matt,
Exactly what I'm aiming for! It's about to look a whole lot more realistic soon... i'm getting into a rhythm painting it. Stay tuned.
Thanks to Lorne and Richa for your comments too - much appreciated.

I've added a new character to the middle - this spy is too impatient to wait to open his present later.
In this submission I've added a rough background and rough light and shadow passes.

Most of the painting completed. Just a few tweaks, additions and changes left to do.

As a foreshadowing, the newspaper reads "Spies Captured On-board the Clandestine Express".
This digital painting captures the sinister appearance of secret agents and all sorts of villains in cartoons from the 40s to the 60s.
The intention of the narrative is to bring the viewer right to the brink of catastrophe with all sorts of things about to happen - double dealings, picking pockets, stealing secret weapons and money, and even explosions. I want to leave the viewer thinking "They're all up to no good, what's going to happen next?"

It looks great - really atmospheric lighting and the character design reminds me of the old title sequences on the Pink Panther films, excellent!
And I think you made the right decision to a) pack the characters in more tightly on the tube train rather than the first iteration and b) to remove the backs of the heads which were in the immediate foreground earlier on, they pushed the action backwards.
