Hey all, i have an animation of my character watching TV and i want to use the light from the tv as my main source light.
How would i go about setting up a light so as to make it look like the whole room is lit just by the tv
and also to get the subtle fluctuations every time the channel changes or a cut. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

do you have access to mental ray? if so, link the tv image to the incandescence of the screen material as well as the color. you may have to crank up the alpha though.

If you have the rendering power, I imagine you could use final gathering and global illumination to light the room with a flickering tv.

Just apply an avi to the screen (nurbs plane or whatever) of the television and turn on final gathering. The screen should emit light based on the color of the avi so that as the movie file plays the lighting will flicker like a real tv.

I've never tried this, but I see no reason why it would not work. If this works for you please let us know.

Of course, you could always keyframe the color/intensity of a regular maya light to get a similar effect. But I assumed you were asking for a more automated method.;)

EDIT: wgeddes (check the response time, you posted the same idea 3min before me! I need to learn to type faster, lol:D )

you can also use like a point light, posistion it infront of your screen a little. i would just use "careful lighting" fake the global illumination. you would probably want to make the light so it dont effect everythign in yoru scene as well, by using light linking. thats just whati would do.

FG GI, they always look incredible but if you can try and ligh t it your self. look how the light would be actually reacting in real life. then try to mimic that.

Why do you just put a spot light behind the screen, and breake link with screen? You can easily key light's attributes or put an animated texture to light's color.

thank u all, i can't use mental ray as it takes way too long for the renders. I guess a spot light with an avi for color would be good.
