View Full Version : Fine Tuning Character Rig Need Help.
Uncharted-Artist 06-22-2009, 12:22 PM Hello all, this is my first post and it seems i really need help with my character. I got the mesh deforming pretty well in all the joints except this one area is giving me a lot of trouble. The shoulder and armpit area, whenever i lift my arms up so high (like to say have him reach behind his back to say scratch his back or reach for a sword) there is some mad twisting going on there with the mesh. Ive tried messing around with the weight of the verts and i've made some improvements but its still not looking very good. I currently have my mesh skinned to the biped because that's how i was taught and was wondering if anyone knows any tutorials or has any advise that can help me. The program i am useing is 3D Studio Max and if i should just make my own bones instead of useing the biped please let me know, if its the more professional way to make your own bones i will re skin the whole thing i dont mind.
Thanks.

Using biped is fine, however, I personally really dislike working with it as I have found a lot of issues with it in the past.
Anyway, Adding your own joints is an option, however, be careful as I'm sure there is a memory leak with attaching your own bones to a biped (someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I had an issue with this sort of thing a few years back).
Alternatively, use corrective shapes. Blendshapes or morphs they're called in max. I can't remember the exact name of the modifier (dont have max nearby), but there is some sort of morph modifier that allows you to pipe in a morph over the rotation of joints and such. Totally take a look at that as it works pretty nicely.

What he is referring to is the skinmorph modifier :) I definitely recommend checking that out also, it works well.
