what exactly do you mean exactly? I use 3D-Coat, Mudbox and ZBrush with Maya for my painting source imagery, which is semi-abstract. If you just want to make crazy shapes, 3D-Coat 3.0's voxels are great for that

Take a look through the zbrush gallery and other work that artists have produced. Are you 2D or 3D ? How abstract is down to the artist and your imagination.
