I'm new to the whole modding thing. I just graduated high school and I wanted to get some more game design stuff under my belt, I'm not too sure if I should try messing with the cry engine or go the steam route, I've heard both of those offer a lot to modders.

and I'm not too sure where to start, I've made some low poly stuff such as this
1899 tris - 512 diff, spec, bump

but I'm lost on how to actually get it into a game.

The Crysis editor and the Unreal Tournament 3 editing tools seem to be pretty good stuff to work with if you want to import models and textures. Source is a bit of a pain to get custom content working in if you've never done it before. There are huge threads over at Polycount about both the UT3 engine and the Crysis engine if you want help from people who've worked with the stuff before. There's also a lot of good official support for both engines from the developers and that's just a Google search away.

Take a look at the Technical Talk section over at Polycount and you should be able to get a lot of really good info:

I recommend starting with either Unreal Editor 3 or Hammer (the Source level editor). Hammer has more resources available to learn from, but I think Unreal is a little easier to wrap my brain around.

I've never used CryEngine or Doom3 (Idtech), so I can't suggest anything either way. Within a semester playing with Unreal I was able to make this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGsbJ5ADU54&fmt=22

if you decide to go the Unreal route, Hourence's is a GODSEND. http://www.hourences.com

and if you want any help let me know, and I'll see what I can do.

Oh! and also, one of the nice things about Unreal Editor is that it comes with the game, available at Amazon for just under fifteen bucks. Hard to beat that.
