First of all...
Welcome to SIGGRAPH 2009 !!!
My name Luis E. Zambrano. I posted this thread so that all the SVs XSVs and if possible the SV committee could openly discuss/talk about any wonders, thoughts and expectatives about the conference, as well as describing ourselves so we can get to know each other.
I'm from Venezuela I'm a Java programmer and I'm currently studing Computer Science, this is going to be my 2nd time attending SIGGRAPH as an SV. I'd like to give some advices from my own experience last year.
For the first time attendees (as well as for everyone) my advices are:
1.- BRING YOUR WORK/PORTAFOLIOS.
This is something you must do. SIGGRAPH is not only about learning the last trends in the Computer Graphics World. SIGGRAPH 2009 is quite the bazaar of oportunities. SIGGRAPH is also about promoting/selling yourself to the graphics industry. Believe me last year I heard a lot of people complain "I should brought my (work/drawings/desing/etc)" so if you have anything to bring, BRING IT! bring your homework, bring your CVs, bring anything you have to show.
2.- BRING YOUR BUSINESS CARDS.
Read above...
3.- BE POLITE AND WORK A LOT (and arrive early).
Trust me, people notice this and we as SVs (especially wearing the flashy red vests ;-) ) get a little bit more attention. There is a lot of people in this indrustry, but designers, artists and anyone in this world has a skill to remember faces and names, so try to shake hands with anyone that comes your way.
4.- Look out for FJORG.
They like making a ruckus everywhere, so join them :)
5.- ABOUT THE EXHIBIT FLOOR.
Try to assemble a group and always have a friend down there, you never know when they start to give those Google T-shirts and the walking teapots, whenever you see a line of people, get to the last place ASAP and only then ask what is it for.
No seriously that place is amazing It took me 2 days to "fully" enjoy the booths that I had highlighted before the conference.
6.- If possible do Pre-Conf work.
This is an awsome oportunity to meet the people behind the cameras of the conference. And of course since you will be working before the conference you will have less shifts and therefore more time avaibleto enjoy the conference itself.
For the time being that's it. So I'm officially inviting everybody to participate in this thread.
Take care...
::: UPDATE :::
I reposted this on the actual SIGGRAPH 2009 forums. If someone knows how to delete it from here it would be perfect, so that we avoid redundance and inconsistence of information.
