View Full Version : How do I transfer details to normal map for low poly?
JesseGraffam 06-21-2009, 12:34 AM Hey guys I'm hitting a wall here. I have a high res character model made up of 10 objects and an identical low res character that is 1 object and was modeled over the high poly so it would match. I would like to project the high res detail to a normal map to apply to the low poly. All the UV's are set and ready to go on the low poly. Can anyone give me a step by step on how to do this, I'm kinda new to this process.

Xnormal seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. However I load my low, and the 10 objects in high mesh and everytime I try to export the map I run out of memory when the map is generating. I only have 2 gigs mem. Should that be enough? My high res objs also equal about 15 million poly's total. Is that too much?

Chances are you dont have enough RAM to render in one pass. You can however change the raycaster to "memory conservative". You can find that option in the normal maps dialog under ray caster. This could solve the problem.
The other method is to just add a few meshes at a time, lets say you add 5 out of 10, save that first render pass, do the same for remaining meshes and simply merge all of the resulting maps in photoshop.
