"those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it", and add another unfinishd entry on their shoulders :)

and as always i'm dumb to start with the character design before having an idea for the final image.. well, time will tell..
and i will try to find something that makes him more special than atm.. but for now, back to real work :)

thanks a lot everyone, your comments motivate me to keep thinking about this!

MonteCristo,
the cgpart took max 4 hours, mixing photos, tweaking proportions and painting. i used the top left sketch as a base but found the 2 heads a bit to much. but i'll give them another try as i find the idea funny.

this is just a rough, but as it might just be an idea thats going to the trash, i'll let it like this for the moment.
not the most original idea, but it would be a fun pic to do in 3d(lots of characters :P )
with the mosnter tentacles running deaper into the pic, and a design pass on everthing..

http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/24/18003/18003_1245963430_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/24/18003/18003_1245963430_medium.jpg)

yes when u mention it.. strange :D

another rough. my biggest concern with this idea is that it's hard to understand and/or that it's not very "secret agent". can anyone confirm my suspicions?

flyingP
07-01-2009, 08:45 AM
my biggest concern with this idea is that it's hard to understand and/or that it's not very "secret agent".

you are probably onto a winner then :)

at least it has tentacles, a guy in a hat, and a chicken on a fishing pole. :bounce:

do think the tentacle thing should be being distracted from doing something diabolical though, at the moment it looks like he is calling the taxi, give him a half dozen blood covered chain saws or something...oh and u forgot the mandatory insane scientist sitting on his head in some sort of controlling device with too many levers.

gpepper
07-01-2009, 01:20 PM

fellah
07-02-2009, 07:46 AM
Agent Brian,
you're good spotting stuff. i didn't notice the taxi wave(ot the sushi) but u're right, looks stange :)
if i go with that idea i'll dfinitely change that. thanks for all the ideas!

Gilles,
u prefer v4 over v5 as well? thanks for your input.

a new rough idea.
i think this direction is a more obvious secret agent theme than the previous ideas but maybe i'll try putting him in a rooftop in a Parisian alley instead of central park.

but i like the challenge this idea offers with all the trees. and i would rather do the little kid in 3d than the man.
the mood would definitely change to something more dramatic once in 3d. if i go this direction will say.

5 is nice, but doing nice tress is harder than nice buildings...

AJ
07-03-2009, 08:29 AM
I really like the idea of the kid up high with only a gum-ball/water pistol type weapon, but looking incredibly serious.

I also really like the idea of having him on a roof top - like he's in a place no kid should really be.

You could then have it so he's either about to attack a 'silly' target - ice cream truck, man selling balloons, teacher walking to their car, a big bully/thug type kid, or a child supervillian (i.e - sinister looking little kid stroking a white kitten, kid bodyguards...etc).

OR

You could make it that the target is something disproportionately serious, like the president/mayor/prime ministers car (again, surrounded by body guards), a truck carrying a nuclear warhead, or the entrance to a giant fortified building with heavily armed guards...etc.

OR

None of the above!

:D

fellah
07-03-2009, 02:14 PM
dissar, xeni, Vincent, thanks a lot!!!

Gilles,
yes, but it would be a "challenge" to try the trees ;) i'll try another idea before starting anything serious though!

Hey Fellah !

No John around this time ? :D

Incredible concepts this time again ! That's kinda annoying to watch you popping you with the funniest ideas around everytime :)

Yep definitely !

thanks a lot for your kind words!!!

Stephane,
haha you still remember! John checks in and out but he is to busy with work(I should be to, as we're working together :) ) to hang around like before.
thanks for your input, it helped me choose concept. i will go with the park idea!

Brian,
cool idea! maybe i can have the cat scenario in the park. the only downside to that is that it's more work and I've little time for this.

Rasmus,
haha :) long time since i saw personal stuff from myself as well. there's been lots of work recently. (nothing to complain about :) )

thanks again for all your inputs!

I'll stick to the park idea but might take ideas from the alley pic, such as the perspective and maybe have a team of kids doing something to a cat or another kid instead of the 2 "dealers".
depends on how much time I'll have.

here's the update, blocking in. i blacked out the parts that i haven't really worked on at all.
http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/24/18003/18003_1247051025_medium.jpg (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/24/18003/18003_1247051025_medium.jpg)
trees will get more details, more flowers and leaves, branches, details to city etc.. but it's a start.
comments/ideas are ofcourse welcome

Zapan

Great !!

The 2 concepts merged great ! The kids tourmenting a cat is a good idea , or maybe a mean ice cream kart/balloon seller , or simply a little girl instead of the cat making the mission more important.

Anyway great stuff for now , looking forward for more !

authentic
07-23-2009, 07:54 PM
Well anders about the young boy pose I would say I prefer him seen from the back. It depends of course of the focus you want to give. Even he's the hero of your picture he wants to show us the little characters who will be in the park. Moreover if you want to focus on him like this last picture that will be really difficult in term of colors/luminosity. You'll have to make him a little bright if he looks to us, well lighted, but you will no more have any depth with your superb park nand his bright and saturated colors. If he's from the back he will be very dark with maybe a beautiful rimlight and you'll have great contrast. But of course we won't see his face... MAybe that's possible to keep everything but, according to me, it will be very difficult. And well that's a challenge, so maybe that's your challenge :)

edit : but if you have no time to make the 2 other characters, keep him like this.

nice shot....So...you are working with 3dmax?...or what is that?

Vincent,
thanks for your input! your thoughts are the same as my worries.
if this was not a "secret agent" challenge the decision would have been easy, he would look at the dealers.
but it's hard to kill your darlings.. so if i would keep the look-at-camera pose maybe i can make him dark with a rim, even if he's looking at us. but.. hm.. well i might try both, it's just a little twist to the body.

Carlos,
yes you're right, rendered in max/vray(kid with hair was rendered in lightwave as i didn't have him exported at that time). models in lightwave.

maybe you can switch the roles, you can have the spy in the garden with another person(a friend or boss or something) and have a bad guy on the foreground menacing the hero, this way you will have the focus on your lovely character!!
i hope you will find a solution soon, even with your actual it's looking nice.
good luck!!

the deal could have been between 2 squirrels on a tree, dealing nuts ;)))

they would have been close to the camera...with the kid in the back :))

with the same cool BG

my 2 cents !!!

Younes,
thanks for the idea!! but i decided to go with "AJ's" idea about he bad boys mocking a poor cat.

ila,
thanks friend!

Bananass,
as u know i find it a great idea.
i had a big think about it on the train but i felt it would make the agent a bad guy more than an agent, shooting little squirrels.
and the kids gum pack and all would barely be visible. but maybe it can make a nice animation some day ;)

Ryan,
thanks mate, long time no speak! everything fine with you? glad to see you here!

here's the idea with the boys, thanks to AJ and my girlfriend for ideas to this.

I'll make them in 3d(rough) just to get the perspective/lighting and then paint in the rest. time is ticking and I'll leave for Croatia on Saturday(or Friday, no time to remember :) )

sorry for the lack of updates recently, i've been super stressed with this challenge and sleept 4 hours the last 48hours and i'm going to catch a plane to Croatia in 1 hour :)

so this will have to be my final image. even though i wish i had at least one more day to fine tune it, i'm happy i finally finished a challenge after all these years.

thanks to everyone for all the feedback during this challenge, i'm sure that without it i wouldn't have finished.
i'm sorry i didn't post more wips in the end but if anyone's interested i'll post more when i'm back and have more time for it.

so thanks again and good luck in the challenge everyone, i look forward to come back to see all great final images !!

the little agents mission is to rescue the cat and teach the bad boys a lesson!

Ah, finally something finished. Awesome.

If I may have some crit, it would be light on the agent - I'd add some subtle fill light on him. Now the shadows (and he's mostly in the shadows) get crushed to black bit too much. Maybe that's a color correction thing - but I think you could maintain the clear silhouette without it being so dark.

It is really har to create an image with so much colour variety and still keep it harmonious, and you did it! COngratulations!!

This sure is fun! It reminds me of the kid next door when I was growing up. He was always torturing some poor animal. Once he duct taped the tail of our cat to another neighbors dog's tail... What a memory that is... poor cat got drug almost to death as the dog tried to get away from claws and fangs.

Awesome image!

Congratulations on the honorable mention, Anders! Please don't be mad at me, I didn't mean to "steal" your prize - I'm sure they'll edit the awards page soon and out your name instead of mine under your thumbnail! (But I know how you feel: I just this week got a book in the mail that I did the cover art for... but it was credited to a whole different artist! Oops!)
Anyhow, congrats!

thanks everyone! except Mathias Smurfhasselt ;)

walrus,

haha i don't blame you for that. and link or not, i'm just glad i got an honary mention!
it would have feelt much worse if it was printed in a book as you experienced.
infact i've had similar experiences.
an example is when we did the character models for a pilot of a serie. another studio took over the "mass production" and replaced our names with theirs, even though they used our models without changes!
