Hi!

I'm just starting to get into modeling with Maya. Actually, I have been doign it for a while, and I'm fiarly familiar with the tools. You can see my current work at:http://joshuanitschke.saber-x.com. Just in case you need to see where I'm at.

Anyway, I haven't done much with characters and organic modeling as you can see in my portfolio, and since I want to work for pixar when I grow up, I decided I better start getting used to doing it. haha.

Anyway, I tried to make a Kronk like character (Emperors New Groove). Here is what I have so far:

I know it really sucks, but its my first humanoid model. I made it in Maya and I started with a cube. I don't think the mesh is good for a human, and this is where I am mainly looking for suggestions. I also have no idea how to do the face; I had enough problems getting the head round!

Thank you for your time! Cheers.

edit: The bottom pic in the sequence shows the model smoothed.

The first thing to remember when modeling is that you should always plan out what you're going to build before you start modeling. That means reference images. Either drawings or photos of some kind are an absolute must-have. I'm guilty of not having proper reference materials myself, and find that it just makes my job harder in the long run. Before you spend too much more time modeling your character, try drawing some sketches of how you want him to look, or hit the internet and look for reference materials. You'll save yourself a lot of frustration in the long run.

You most likely want to get a reference picture or a good anatomy book.
If you can draw with a pencil, that's obviously a great plus since it allows you to sketch your idea on paper first.
As a first comment, you should try to get the proportions of your character right. I have not seen that particular movie and it is a cartoon where proportions are sometimes distorted, but in general, the typical person has concrete proportions in terms of the length of the limbs vs. the size of the head vs. the body, etc.
That's where getting a good anatomical reference will help.
Also, try to model each element individually. Model the character as if it were naked first. Then add the clothes as other objects, instead of trying to make it all out of single cube.
