Hi Cgtalk :) My first post here and first challenge wohoo! I think the topic is very cool and wish everybody good luck in the challenge! Here is a sketch of the scene I will be working on, later I'll add some motion blur and cartoon deformations... hope you like it

Most impressive!
Question though, is the bike to scale? Somehow I feel it is a bit "stubby" like a mini-bike, the size of the fuel tank, for example, in relation to the tyres.... almost like a toy bike.
But the deformations, if that is what you did, are so slight, and the detail is high enough so that I am confused as to whether it's a mini-bike or a deformed fullsize bike.
Is there an existing actual make of this bike? I find it quite cute!

thank you, Giancarlo, glad you like it!
In fact, there is such a bike, it is made in the 30ies and 40ies, the models I looked for reference are cj750, BMW R/75 with sidecar and some other similar models, but mainly it is cj750. I modeled it as a real scale bike, but wanted to add some cartoon look to it, (as you noticed the slight deformations and the tweaked proportions), to better fit my scene and to be more interesting I hope :)

It is a great piece of work. It straddles a strange line between being real enough and being deformed enough. Hope it can be carried into the car, the forest, and a bit curious how the characters will carry it.
The scale might recall images from SNK's "Metal Slug", but that won't be a bad thing.
Best of luck! :)

yes you are right about the bike looking real, it is more realistic than I intended. Later when making the scene I'll stretch it more, depending on the render angle, or just will crop some of the details I'm not sure how it is going to end :) Thank you again and good luck 2 you too mate

i think the bike looks great. it has an intermediate look to it between cartoon and real. its a good balance i think. :D
Bike is great for me on the later stage may be it could be changed to fit full image style but for the moment it is perfect, great start :)

I absolutely love the 'chunky' stylization of the bike. Very fun to watch. Can't wait to see more.

And now, double the action, triple the excitement! Agent Karandash is here, equipped with his base head and wip clothes, expecting to read your comments and critiques :)
My reference for the character is Rodney Dangerfield. One of the greatest!

Nicely done character! The Rodney Dangerfield influence is unmistakable, while not looking like a mirror image of him. The eyes are coming along nicely - I hope you don't end up covering them with goggles. Looking forward to seeing it all come together!
Hey Ludmil,
Cool concept, and great models, very nice style on it!! Cheers!!

Stormf, I'm not sure about the hair mate, maybe he will have a nurse hat or a nun veil, I am currently experimenting with the outfit :)

Perfect work! How did you make leaves on tree?
irwit
07-28-2009, 02:38 PM
Love the style, your modelling has captured it perfectly! I think maybe a tighter crop could be more dramatic but it maybe a little early for things like that just yet.
idkfa
07-28-2009, 03:10 PM
Hi Alexey, glad you like the image!
The leaves are solid geometry with mapped color, which I rotated and cloned around a sphere, at different height, with array tool. After this I moved and rotated some of them to get less uniform contour and volume. And finally I put leaves with darker material inside that shape, to simulate deeper shadow.
Irwit, thank you mate, its just the time of the year :). Later I will render some more vegetation.

ok guys some updates, meet the gangster Ted, a.k.a. The Stoneface, hope he looks ok, for there is not much time left...
Soon I will post the other crew

Love the distortion and perspective on the ambulance, it's looking great! The underside seems to be really lacking in detail compared to the front of the car, making it look like a toy instead of a real vehicle... but you probably have bigger things to worry about with this much time left. :D Good luck!
idkfa
08-07-2009, 10:01 AM
thank you for looking, Walrus
And good luck to you too!
You are right about the car, I'll try to put some pipes and stuff there or smoke and bushes :D

Thats some really sweet sculpting.
I've noticed some overblown highlights on the ambulance. Do you use any kind of exposure control/color mapping? Depending on software, in Max Logarithmic or MR photographic exposure control can help to fix that issue. In Vray, it would be Exponential color mapping.
But be careful - that stuff can lower the contrast, and change overall look, so some PS color correction is a must.

thank you guys, glad you like the models. I really had fun modeling them :-D.
Andrzej, I don't use exposure control, i tried the logarithmic one, but had problems with the ambient color, it was totally grey, so for now I'm rendering without it. Maybe its a check or something, but... I'm still not familiar with mental ray. I'll tweak the car paint material to be less shiny. Thank you for the critique.

The merciless Stoneface and the wacky bird-thing. For the faces I used reference of Rodney Dangerfield, Lucille Ball and Ted Knight.
