chilli11 06-15-2009, 06:48 AM Hey, I just stumbled to this forum from...well, I'm not really sure where, but I'm glad I did.
I started sketching about two months ago to kill some stress. I drew quite a bit before high school, and took one art class my sophomore year, but in the intervening decade I haven't done much, if anything, with a pencil.
I'm a graphic and web designer, so most of my "art" is cutting and pasting other people's work. It's been a lot of fun since I started putting pencil on paper, and I'm starting to like it. I've seen some improvement in my sketchbook, and I figured some criticism would be good. So let me have it. But not too hard ;)
I'll post my first sketchbook images tomorrow, once I have them uploaded to my server.

These are my first sketches, from April '09. I did 10 pages or so before this that I couldn't find, But this is basically where I started. I was initially focused on comic-style, but I'm now focusing on more realistic figures.
This is an early attempt at DareDevil and my first drawing without a reference. Her right arm is a bit long.

This was a Ms. Marvel Cover, with some changes...mainly that the person she was fighting isn't included. Also some various studies, all with models

These two were mid-April and took about an hour and 45 minutes each

More random studies, some with reference, some without. Still focusing on comic-style. These were in early May.

The rest of these are from June.
I know I posted a lot of stuff right in a row, which will make commenting on the earlier stuff hard, but it's ok, because I'm more concerned with the more recent drawings. I look forward to your comments!

Hi Charles, welcome to the forum! Good start for your sketchbook. You show a good sence for shapes in your drawings. You need to devellop some more confidence in your linework, but that will come with practice. Keep posting!

Thanks for the encouragement guys!
I'm usually pretty highly caffeinated when I sit down to draw, and short on either time or patience. I rush, which leads to scribbling. I'm working on it, but it's tough.
I switched from a .7mm mechanical pencil to an ebony pencil for some of the drawings in the last post, and it's made a big difference in my lines for (some of) my later drawings.
The rest of these have been drawn in the last week, and are not necessarily in chronological order.

I for one see immense improvement, the last sketches have a lot of life in them and are pleasant to look at.
I particularly like the quick sketch of the girl sitting down, a lot of weight in that one!
Thanks for sharing :)

Thank for all of your feedback, guys...I'm looking forward to learning from you!
This is a study from the references on OFDW #1

One of my very first pen sketches. I realized when I finished that even though I felt pretty good about the figure, I screwed up the arrow corresponding with her left leg. Oh well.

And a drawing I did with an ebony pencil from some reference photos.

I've been drawing sporadically because of school for the last month or so. I've been trying to do fewer detailed drawings, more gestures and simple forms.
These are all 3-7 minutes, except for the ones in pen.

Well, can't say I don't see the improvements so far. You're drawings are really getting more mature, and your line seem to be more focused and deliberate. I don't think I can really help you for now, as you seem to be more advanced than me in many ways, but I'll keep an eye on your thread for inspiration. Keep the posts coming! ;)

A few more sketches. I did the first one and the last three without an eraser around. The first four pages are photo ref, the last three are from Bridgman.

Frotze - Thanks for the encouragement! I've been sketching in random places and I don't have a sketchbook small enough to tote around at the moment, so there's a three month gap in the drawings I have to share.

It's been exactly four months, and I don't know if I've made any progress. But I have switched almost entirely to pen in a hardcover Piccadilly plain paper journal.

Excellent thread! There is a lot of improvement here! Very inspiring to see someone progress so much over a handful of posts.
Do you go to many life drawing sessions? It seems like you say that a lot of your stuff is from photos or other references (which is great practice). It seems like you would do really well with a model too. Keep em coming!

Thanks! I wish I could spend more time drawing regularly. I have two young kids, I work full-time, and I'm a full-time grad student. Summer's really the only time I can draw more than 20 minutes at a time. I definitely don't have time to get to a life session. So photos is all I have for now, until my wife decides she's comfortable modeling for me.
