Well, here goes my first entry into a a CGS challenge. I really like the "Secret Agent" theme. I'm big fan of Burn Notice, Alias, Chuck and spy movies.

My initial thought was to do something with espionage and tech gadgetry. I'm a big fan of robots and micro-machines so I've been doing some sketches trying to incorporate those elements. I don't know if I'll go this direction for sure or not, but here are a couple sketches and a few of my pre-vis references.

This is going to be a hoot!

Well, I took a really small thumbnail sketch and made a little tighter pass so I could mess with a possible design. I'm going to work on adding some more energy in the poses of the two foreground figures. They are pretty stiff.

I like the sillhouette of the fem-fatale in the doorway. The Spyder-bot is coming along. It has a general creepiness that i like.

Anyway, a fun start. I think I might try a couple other ideas before going much further with this one. Any thoughts?

i like this picture because it does pose the question of who is good, bad, and looking on. I like the silhouette in the doorway but the spider doesn't really blend into the composition. i like the idea though. maybe a different angle would give it more life.

The Siepa tone sketch in the concept was looking more dynamic than the later sketch. One of the things that I liked about the concept was the lines of action for the sillouttes in the latter sketch it feels like you've lost all the action.

Hey RenderSpud, how's it going?

I really like the idea too but I'm not sure about the robo spider crawling over a wall. It doesn't feel like the danger is eminent. Maybe play around with bringing one of the characters closer to the spider and maybe it's about to attack or crawl up an arm or something.

I agree about the lifelessness of the greyscale thumb. I did this blocked out version in different layers so I could push elements around and work on the composition a little. My wife hated it. :-) She didn't get that the spider was a spy robot drone that looked like a spider. She thought it was scary... she hates spiders!

Then it occurred to me that there really isn't a lot of visual information here to let the veiwer know what the heck the spider robot is there for or what it is or does. If it had a camera or a bazooka/rocket launcher or even poison darts then the veiwer might get a little more info. :-)

I'm working on another idea too. Thanks a ton for the input. I really appreciate it.

No problem. One of the things that I really liked about the first sketch was the action... it seems to me that the life of the secret agent is all about action, whether you are James bond, Remo Williams, or a Mutant from the planet X... =)

OK, so I took my wife's advice and came up with a concept that is a little more humorous and in a style that I seem to like. The basic concept deals with day-dreaming (Something I seem to do a lot of).

So, I wanted a character who was caught in the act of day-dreaming about being a secret agent. I wanted part of the image to show the "real" world and then have that fade away into a glimpse of the guys' imagination where he is now a spy in somekind of death-defying mission.

I don't have the 'fantasy' section worked completely out yet that will fill the white space on top, but... I want the main dude/character to be riding a superbike, firing missles with a beautiful female agent (same lady as in car) clutching him as he wheelies forward and she takes aim at bad guys all around.

Anyhoo, that's the new concept. I havn't given up on the other one yet either. I'm having too much fun. Comments welcome.

Oh, I didn't mean it in a critical way...just that the character reminded me of someone.

LOL. I had to google "Ron Jeremy" to see who he was.... HAHAHA... oh, boy. the stuff that popped up :-) There definately is a similarity. Might have to change my character a little... too funny!

Totally correct Mic... I'm working on the secret agent part now. The full comp has a white space above this image where we get to peek into Ron's... eh ehm... the dudes fantasy of himself as a secret agent. In a way I think this could say secret agent in a double way... first, the secret that no one else can see but us, the character imagining himself as a secret agent... and second, the actual depiction of a secret agent (which I hope I can post later).

Thanks a ton guys for the comments! I'll dork around with this some more this afternoon.

Well, I did some major tweaking to the composition. I took out the big semi and replaced with a smaller redneck truck, I pushed the scooter dude to the right and added an exploding car.

I'm starting to get the composition dialed in so I think I'll start adding some backgrounds for the upper and lower sections and then start working on values and colors.

I also want to change the face of the main character... he just isn't that interesting to me anymore. Thoughts?

Great idea Michael (tell your wife)...My only problem is that it seems bottom heavy with a lot going on and not much on the top half. What if you made the main characters in the daydream larger but kept the view looking upward keeping the buildings and helicopters in the background?
Just a thought, Randy

So I found a couple hours today to mess around with some color schemes. Since the concept deals with alter egos and opposites I wanted to create a day and night contrast. I also wanted to keep the main color hue fighting with it's complement in the composition. This range of palette is my favorite so far. I like bright contrasting colors, especially when the image is done in a whimsical style. Your thoughts are appreciated. -m

i like the third thumbnail. First of all blue/orange is my favorite colors together. And i like that that third one is darker at the top than the second in the middle, even though the second one does still look good. Like all the colors go good together. and in the third one i like the orange glow on everything compaired to the first one. So my first vote is for the third thumbnail. But if you dont like it then the second thumbnail. But i dont like the first one, i guess i just dont like the colors in the bottom of it.

Creativebush

I too like the 3rd thumbnail, the colors seem to work best there.

I do like the "Ron Jeremy" version better and not because it's him but he just looks better.

With all that being said, I love your concept... great idea.

Thanks Martin, tyleen and bush! I agree, the third one has a better contrast between dawn and dusk... The colors are a little richer too.

I like the 'Ron Jeremy' dude too. I liked him a lot more before I knew who Ron Jeremy was :-)

I'm definately not going with the main character a have in my comps. I need him to look like a nerdy doofuss as the moped rider and then really smooth as he imagines himself to be. I'm workinging on characters today. Hopefully can post some for crit soon.

Thanks!

I was working up the main character and his scooter when I had an idea for putting a hard spot on the agent and his passenger... like a helicopter is overhead and lighting him up from the side or front. So I used an old color-test and roughed it in. Really rough... but I like it because it adds the possibility of popping some high contrast areas on that area. Thoughts?

This is really a clever concept with a great style. One thing that I quite like (though I may be reading into this a bit much) are all the possible meanings of the main guy's right hand gesture. To me it simultaneously says "I have an idea", "just a moment" to the traffic behind, and also represents the gun in the fantasy. Because of all these possibilities though, I can't help but wonder if one specific meaning should stand out more. But as I said, I might just be reading into this too much. In any event, nice work.

WyattHarris

Hmm, in the first few concepts it looked like the girl in the car was mad because this dunce was holding up traffic. With the expression she has in the detail work it looks like she is surprised or scared. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

I agree with Wyatt. It would be great though if she was angry in the real world, but has this suprised/scared expression in the Daydream.

On a second note, I also loved one of the earlier concept painting comparisons for the Hero character, the one where his expression is exactly the same in both the Real and Daydream worlds. This emphasizes that HE is the one generating the fantasy, and the idea the girl is the total opposite in either kind of puts an accent on how he's in it so deep he cannot perceive how people see him.

Very nice concept.

WyattHarris & CGIPadawan... Thanks for the input. I totally agree. I painted two versions of her face with different emotions. Below is an updated detail after I swapped heads. Thanks for pointing this out. I was pretty tired when I posted.

WyattHarris... regarding having the heads in the same pose, originally I wanted to do that. My wife thought that the agent should look less goofy so I made his teeth a little nicer and changed his look from a total doofuss to semi-studly. I'm torn on this. I have to admit I favor your suggestion.

Elser, thanks for the encouragement. While I can't honestly say that I meant to have the hand have multiple meanings, I was aware that it could be taken that way. below is a reference shot that shows the hand as it now stands. I cocked it to match the angle of the agent with the pistol.

No! hahaha! NO! hehehe. But seriously, The Hero, in my view, SHOULD have the exact head and pose in both worlds. It's like.... how.... he is "the best"... only in the world of his own making. So even to US (the Viewer).. the agent looks GOOFY. But in HIS world... it works.

It's kind of like that Rambo skit in the Weird Al Yankovic film "UHF". His Rambo character still looks ridiculous to us (it still looks like weird al but in a Rubber Suit).. but in the world of his imagination, he is invincible... The improper combination of elements is what makes people laugh harder.

But.. I am not your wife... So... maybe wiser to follow the wife. :scream:

Hahaha! It's incredible! After I just convinced you to go one way, two people decide to go the other way.

I mean.. wow.. :p The truth is there are no right or wrong answers when it comes to intangible things like "story sense" or "image impact"... There is only the artistic persuasion to go in either direction. But man, this is just ONE PICTURE!

We could spark a whole argument about the "Looks exactly like Himself" VS "Looks better than Himself" thing. But imagine if this was a 90 minute movie! What fun! :applause:

Truly, one wonders all the mayhem that probably occurs when writing a larger story... All the things people can argue about....

But I digress. LOVE the Update! LOVE the Direction (which we both agree is right for this image! We're winner!) hahahah! :) :p

You cropped it quite heavily.. but I can see the "weights" of the different colors. This is going to look like a lot of fun.

Good luck! Keep going I want this to make the deadline! :)

Thanks for the encouragement Creativebush, pierzak, CGIPadawan.

I'm heading into a really busy couple weeks so I'm not going to get much time to work on this for a bit. I'm bummed... Still, I should be able to finish this in time. Full-time jobs, such a pain:rolleyes:

The whole head debate is pretty interesting. Does a nerdy day-dreamer think of his alter-ego secret agent as looking different than himself? I'm still hangin with no. I think most of us have our identities tied to our mugs. We can imagine ourselves with leaner, meaner, and more agile bodies... but if we mess with our face, then we aren't "me" anymore. That's my angle anyway... but I've still got Mr. Slick head if I need it.

Well to add to your thoughts, I've had lots of dreams similar to your concept.

*Major Confession ahead*

I had this "Die Hard In High School" dream once when I was in High School where the school was taken hostage by evil ski-masked troops led by Malcolm McDowell and I magically gained all these Commando abilities. It was basically like... "first person".... "living the adventure". I couldn't see myself and all the books had "wavy mispelled words" but it was one of those things where all the bad guys miss and they get beat quite easily. As far as I recall, I wasn't taller nor more muscular.. I was simply doing all the things Pierce was doing in them spy movies. hahaha.

I've also had these dreams where I discovered I was a member of X-Men.

.... and then I wake up.... :p

CGIPadawan... Wow, I don't know what to say :p That's pretty... uh... neat. Yeah, that's it...

LOL... Big smiles here.

I have to admit that most of my bravado happens in the forms of daydreams while standing in line at the bank (or someplace like that) and then a bunch of bad guys come in rough up a gorgeous teller and I stealthfully spring into action. It usually involves diving across a desk or something and doing a nice tuck and roll before coming up under the barrel of the bad guys' gun. Of course I quickly disarm the suprised bandit and take out the other uzzi weilding thugs with pin-point accuracy. Then the bank (or whatever it is) gives me a HUGE reward and I do about 2 wks traveling the TV network circuit and become an occasional guest speaker on America's Most wanted.

It's a tough life.:p

Fantastic progress. I know there's been a bit of a debate over whether he should be more of a stud in the daydream, but personally I wonder about the differences in the woman. In your earlier stuff she seemed slightly more glamorous and idealized in the daydream. I couldn't tell you which way works better though, just something to consider. In any event, enjoy your vacation, you've earned it.

Thanks Elser. I had painted in some quick bling for the girl in an earlier version. I'd like to add more ritz to her for sure. Maybe some fancy ear rings... and some type of head adornment with some flowers or something to help give more motion to the fleeing couple... something like this maybe:

I finally got most of the elements in... still lots to do to fill up the street area behind the scooter dude and I still need to add a lot of little things to fluff this out... including the driver of the pickup. At least most of the elements are in now.

I learned something pretty important while doing this one (or re-learned). No matter how much you want to start noodling individual elements out before you get all the elements in, DON"T. You end up having to take everything else to that level of detail. It's way better to work from loose to tight over the whole image, that way if you stop, it will still look unified.

Oh well, I like the way this is coming along... despite my pain.

Aw great! really nice colors, very refreshing! if any, Id suggest you the same they told me when I made a city scene here a while ago: you could really grunge up the street. No matter how nice the neighborhood you'll always find spots, moist, dents, cracks, gum, wrappers, and simply tonal variations on every sidewalk, road and wall. The part that most would need some dirt is the yellow lining.
Besides it's quite fun to add some grungre to the very stuff you've been so carefully working on! I made like three passes of dirt and still kept getting advise to add more. I don't know...

also I think you can play with the tones in the background directly under the dream ballon, to make that part lighter, first: that would help you push back the buldings more into the background, and second: above the white line you have very dark and/or saturated colors , so keeping more light tones in the bottom would help to separate the two scenes.
Anyway, great work! hope this helps.

This is looking really nice! You're almost there... just a ton of details to work out! But a ton of great details already... Just a few that I love: The wheel of the chopper, the windshields of the cars, the bumper stickers on the moped...

As Steevie pointed out, lots more grunge all over - the setting doesn't have to be grungy per se, just more realistic. The yellow lines on the ground especially need some texture to fit into the scene.

Myself, I find the balloon really distracting. It's light on a darker area that we should be ignoring, it's cool on a warm backdrop... It just keeps puling my eye to the left into an area that's away from the action. Do you really need it? You've already shown the kid's surprised by making him drop his ice cream, does the balloon really add to the scene that much?

I with the woman's bangs were shorter, especially in the bottom image. I know you showed us her expression earlier and she looked mad that the main character was stopping traffic... her expression reads in close-up, but not when the image is taken as a whole. I really wish we could see her eyebrows and thus her expression, I think it would help emphasize the differences between top and bottom.

But mostly, it's just looking super! Good luck with the last bits of polish!

StevieWoo andWalrus, Thanks for the GREAT comments! I really appreciate it. Definately more grunge, street objects, and 'worn' textures coming down the pipe. Interesting comment about the balloon. I never really noticed it but now that it's been pointed out, I have to say I agree. I wonder if I took it away and just had a really faint string hanging down like the balloon has already floated out of the frame....Hmmmm? It doesn't seem to have the same visual 'heaviness' in the bottom 'real' section...

Thanks again guys for the comments!:applause:

Well, I added some grunge and cleaned up a few areas. Still have to add the truck occupants and some more fill elements to add some life to the back buildings. Then clean up some hard edges and fix a few skewed things. So, still plenty to do. Thanks for the great feedback everybody. I took some suggestions from SteevieWoo and Walrus. I kept the balloon but moved it up almost off the screen. For some reason I just think it's goofy that the day dreaming dude would include a balloon in his fantasy. Makes me smile.

Software: Photoshop

The Story:

The secret agent ignored the explosions. He ignored the fire… the screaming… the blaring horns… the half naked woman clutching his bulging muscles. Time stood still.
Mustering all of his internal fortitude and visualization skill, the agent triumphantly tuned out the world and focused solely on his objective.

He ignored the witnesses. He became deaf to the angry voices. Threats bounced off of his ego like bullets hitting Kevlar. The laughter bounced too. Nothing could penetrate his mental defenses and reveal his secret identity. Nothing! Not even the reality that all of this, everything, existed only in one exotic locale… his IMAGINATION.

Michael! :D

This is fantastic. If I were a judge this would be my pic.... but only because it breaks the "4th wall" and touches the heart of Secret Agent fandom. In that one way, it exceeds many of the entries that choose to tell a story "as is".

I feel honored in a way, and in some indirect way satisfied, that our suggestions all made it into final print. Make no mistake, this is 100% YOU... but it makes me smile to think of how hard some of us fought in this thread to keep the Agent "dopey" to match his real-world self hahaha. :)

The first thing I thought of, when comparing "The Daydreamer" to your original concept with the mechanical insect is that you definitely have tons of experience daydreaming. The fact the concept is closer to your heart is what allowed it to far exceed the first concept in terms of finish, style, characters, and number of elements. Simply put, I had the impression you knew a lot more about day dreaming than mechanical insects so things flowed out faster. hehehe :P

The other comment I must make is that it is clear that your vision and ability to produce are within range of each other. That is really special. Too many times vision exceeds the ability to create, but in your case I can see no evidence of that. The image contains great amounts of detail, and you managed to finish on time.

I know you had to stay up to finish this, but factoring out the unexpected interruptions this would have been a comfortable finish.

Great job. :)
