I needed some time to think before posting anything. I promised myself that I first plan out everything on paper but couldn't help making several color sketches for some ideas for this contest. This sketch is not much for now but I have a good feeling about this one.

I found that so far I've been trying to interpret the theme in a more convenient way for me, and that it doesn't work, I'm posting this sketch however because it is the closest I got to the feel I'm looking for. I'm getting closer...

I'm coping with a small crisis - that's why it took me so long to post some work. Anyway, I'm back (hopefully). This is a sketch of an environment, I thought I'd bring in main characters later ... (not a very good idea)

if the concept sketches are any indication, the lighting for this will be gorgeous. I look forward to seeing more.

Ok, so I've settled with the sketch. Now, it doesn't mean I will leave other sketches behind. I'll come back to them later (after the contest) hopefully. I've already started working on details (the character, machinery...).
Dilemma: a piece of construction behind her is supposed to be a time machine - what was I thinking. At first I thought, well, it might be fun. Now, how do I make it clear without using something as common as the clock piece...

Oh, come on... I've painted fabric before, why do I find it so difficult.
Some time ago I came across Linda Bergkvist's tutorial on ImagineFX web (I should probably send her a letter of gratitude, big thanks to her for that anyway), found some very good tips on how to paint fabric. It never actually occurred to me how much time you can save when painting fabric with luminosity filters...

I've worked on these details today; I thought I would post it before going further. I was extremely happy with how things went up to a point when I realised that these details are barely visible from a distance. I'm not able to dispose of the habit of painting in details too soon. How do I make myself work into details gradually? I'm also a bit embarrassed; the result is almost too good, this is turning into the best picture I hope to finish. However, now I don't experience so much difficulty when painting fabric.

I'll finish the dress soon, I've also decided to soften the face, still I think it's a bit out of context. I'm thinking of adding another character into the picture, to bind this piece with the contest's title a bit. I do realise that at this point it may not seem to be relevant. I have perfect excuses for it though ;)...
Love the flow of colors you have going, character is coming out well as well, looking forward to seeing the details, cheers!

Oh I love this :D A bit unclear on the concept, but you're so early into things. And the fabric is very nice, I wouldn't change it too much.

Hey there StepDown.
Great start, love your fabric rendering. I know how paralizing it can be to zoom in and paint stuff like that, you don't even know what happend with the last 10 hours.
A way to avoid that is just not zoom in. Keep it at resolution about 1/2 the size of your screen till it works. Than zoom in a bit further, about full screen size. Work on it more till it works. Etc. Zooming in to early is dangerous (but fun sometimes).

Sorry for not submitting anything in the last three days, I've decided to ditch the original picture and go back to the sketch I started in the beginning. It was really too much to jam into that picture in order to make it work conceptually, plus I had my doubts about several technicalities. Anyway, I thought I won't going to make it to the final image (still do actually), but three days ago it sort of kicked off. I've already sketched in the main character, but I'm posting this image first. First it was more angular shapes, but I decided to go towards fluidity. Again, I go into details too soon, but at this point I don't really care. The result kind of look familiar, but I can't say what was I influenced by.

Have added more details, I have actually learned to pick colors for metal and non-organic textures (I think). Anyway, here's the outcome, with any luck I'll be posting next WIP within a few hours...

So, I've sketched in the main character. I want to make it look as if he is draging a net made of metalic cans and plastic, with some machenery pieces in it... (strange)

I think I'm finally heading towards the end (finished image that is). The main character is not exactly what I wanted him to be, but I'm still satisfied with the result.

I've finally got to my favourite part (details), but painting clouds turned out to be so frustrating. On the other hand, painting water is easier than I thought. I am concerned though, because from a distance the water looks good, but when zooming in it's a bunch of chaotic ugly patters which doesn't seem to make any sense.

So, I'm nearly finished. All I need to do is to paint the face and redo the left lower corner, plus minor adjustments...
Now, his legs and textures on the flour in particular caused a lot of problems. I spent quite a while painting textres of the flour. Although, it is barely visible from a distance, I think it definately makes the difference.

In a distant (or perhaps not so distant) future, the consequences of cataclysms, Global warming forced people to adapt their cities until it was no longer possible due to numerous floods. Floating cities were built. Alternatively, refugees who faced difficulties surviving in this world (above the water surface) adapted abandoned underwater cities, trying to build a community below the water surface. Underwater cities are basically giant treasure chests which preserve valuables, supplies, and most importantly ? knowledge. But two communities cannot completely separate one from another. Therefore, a group of people was formed to keep track. Unnoticed, they monitor each other?s activities, retrieving valuable documents when possible in order to ensure the survival of at least one of the communities. People are still adapting to the situation, so (if possible) they try to strengthen this very week balance between these two worlds. He is one of the members, on one of such missions. The underwater world is not completely cut off, there are unhidden passages just in case, not well guarded (people are still learning). So, he is about to begin...
I wanted the character to be a bit ridiculously conspicuous from the start, exaggerating the fact that nowadays people tend to think of secret agents this way, though it is obvious they are probably exactly the opposite ? invisible. However, I feel I should have worked more on the realism (to match the whole thing). Anyway, that was a great experience, learned a lot, be sure not to make same mistakes next time (whenever and if I will participate in other contests).
