Matte painting for a class at the Art Institute of Vancouver

This is mostly hand-painted with some photographs integrated underneath (you' might see a bit poking out here and there) I did a couple of rough concepts with some simple painting and some photos and then combined and modified them until i got this. This is getting projected into a 3d scene and rendered as a video file.

Unfortunately i ran out of time to do more work on the painting itself as it had a strict deadline, but i am more or less satisfied with the result. I was planning to do some touch-ups and add more details such as wires and some extra structure and small objects.

I'm open to C&C and will try my best to monitor this thread.

I don't get pirates at all when I see this...more like hobbit holes if they lived on the coast. The painting is pretty good (I like how it looks like colored pencil) but it is very important in art to get your point across and that usually comes from the concept/thumbnail stage.

Thanks for your input, CircusRobot. I appreciate the feedback and I'll definitely try and focus more on concept next time, you were right though, this didn't develop much before i went and carried it right through. It went through 2 roughs but that was it.
