View Full Version : going North !
Deestrakt 07-23-2003, 04:49 PM well, not only ThirdEye is going in vacations, i'm going too !
we (i.e me & gf) will leave for Sweden saturday and plan to drive from Stockholm all the way up through Sweden and then Norway to reach north cap :)
I know this is off C4D/CGI topic (if my thread is disturbing, i'll understand if it gets removed), but i noticed that some of you guys are living there, so i thought i could ask you if u recommend some places or nice spots to see. I expect to see beautiful landscapes on our way, but maybe u know some particular places or towns where it would be interesting to make a stop ?
your input would be very much appreciated :)

That is nice to hear!
Now, you would sure like to use a couple of days in Stockholm. If the weather is good (it is right now anyway) there's no place quite like it. I lived there for 25 years before moving further down south in Sweden (should you pass Kalmar on your way, just drop me a line and we could get together for a cup of coffee)...
If you really want to see some nice views and all, I'd recommend driving north through Norway rather than Sweden. It is a lot more interesting. Most parts of northern sweden are, well, not too exciting.... Norway on the other hand is a totally wicked place, topologically speaking.
North Cape is great if the weather works out for you. Unfortunately you will find a thick fog there like 300 days a year, so you need a bit of luck to actually see something. I drove there many years ago, and had the pleasure of finding it saturated with sunlight for three days straight. Which is particularly sweet this time of year since you will find that you can improve your tan quite well even at midnight.
Don't miss the huge bar/nightclub inside the rock when you're there!

thx James !
we'll try to visit Stockholm, yes, if we have time left on our way back. i heard its a beautiful town. but if its not this time, there are good chances we'll come back.
about driving through "northern" Sweden, well, we have to because we are going north, starting to drive from Stockholm. but thats cool because then we'll see also "central" Sweden. (we'll see lot of Sweden in fact :) ). Unfortunatly since we have limited time and lots of kilometers to drive, i dont think we'll have a chance to go south and pass Kalmar. but thx a lot for the coffee, coz that would have been with pleasure !
about northen norway landscapes, i'm expecting to see nice things too. i went in south norway before, around Bergen and traveled a bit in the fjords, its really beautiful.
Which is particularly sweet this time of year since you will find that you can improve your tan quite well even at midnight. eheh, i didnt think about that ! thats a good point, coz me i only thought about how Al Pacino is looking bad in "Insomnia" after a few days up in north ;)
and i'll remember about the bar in the rock, thx again !

Heh,you should of been here last couple of weeks :)
Last week I think we had the two hottest july days for about a 100 years here in Bergen :)
Lots of nice sites down at the beach, lemme tell you.
As for places to see,I've never actually been north past trondheim in my life.
You should check out Nidarosdomen in trondheim if you get the chance tho...it's sweet.
Also, if you like skiing,I can REALLY recommend finding yourself a nice glacier with a ski resort.
Nothing like carving nice fresh snow in the summer :)
Going to go to Folgefonna in a week,at least if the weather permits.
Oh,and just in case you haven't already, you might want to check this one out...
http://www.visitnorway.com/
I think it's one of the better sites, easy to navigate and it has some good info too.
Good luck with your trip!

Not necessarily though. You could just dash over from Stockholm to Norway in a straight western direction on the E18. Then you might as well check out Oslo before you continue north (that would be the E6 straight up until you run out of land to drive on).
Oslo is totally great. Even better than Stockholm, hands down. Especially this time of year. Oh, the sweetness... Seriously, should I ever leave Sweden, it would be for Oslo, no doubt.

hey dAfTiE, thx for input ! so u live in Bergen ? i liked the town ! and not only because there was an internetcafe with cheap access to Q3...eheh :D
thx for the tip about Nidaros cathedral, it looks great. i'm not sure we'll go this south in norway (we plan to go to lofoten islands but its far from trondheim i think), but if we do we'll sure see that.
unless i follow your advice, James, and move west straight away. now i realize i really should have asked that some time ago. i'm leaving in 2 days, and its a bit late to change plans. we have 2 weeks, and some big distance to cover with many options, its gonna be tough to decide. and Oslo...yes, tempting too.. :)
i have new things to think about now, thx guys!
