Have I found my first limitation? How do I align one face to another? Meaning I want to snap one face to anothers where the snapped face will automatically align "sandwich" itself to the same angle as the choosen face without flipping its position(hence again "sandwich idea").

If not (then wow truespace has something max doesn't!), what workarounds should I use?

I have been messing with snap to face and align in face mode in edit mesh, but the closest I can come is 3d snap with face/center turned on. But this only moves the face relative in space to the general area. It does not align the faces to match.

This is with Max 5.

Have you tried the "Normal Align" tool?

:EDIT:

I'm a moron. That does'nt work on the sub-object level.

Hmmm not sure if I understand you correct but maybe make it a totataly separate piece (not sub object), do your align/snap-to business, then attach it back to the main object to make it one object again?

how about selecting the polys verts of the 2 faces you want to align and switching to a perpendicular view and using view align..then you know its in the same plane...or if you could just use vertex snapping

Thanks for the replies:

Death: Didnt work. Doesnt change the angle of the object. to match the face.

halo.. how do I switch to a perpendicular viewpoint of a target face? Viewpoint Shape align? (Just tried doesnt align viewpoint to face). Vertex snapping wont work if the target is a different shape/width.

Here is a picture to hopefully make it easier to understand.
