Below is an image from my Renderosity gallery (http://www.renderosity.com/gallery.ez?ByArtist=Yes&Artist=Kirl) I'd like to get some crits on. It's my first serious try at making an interesting composition as well as some technique's like 3 point lighting and DOF.

I'd like to know what you think of it. Mainly about the Compo, lighting and DOF, I'm aware of the missing detail on some models.

Hey....

The models are really fun.. brings back a few memories with the old Nintendo unit. Nice work.

IMO the composition is a little vague. You have 4 or five items... all the same size, spread around in a circle. The focus, to me, becomes the empty space in the middle of all the objects. Try focusing on perhaps the cube, in a pyramid type arrangement or using depth of feild to focus on one piece in particular. The lighting is ok to show the modeling but it's not as interesting as I am sure you are capable of. Try adding a slight bit of color to the scene, whether by lights or by the floor color. The scene seems lacking in a specular sense... try adding an HDRI image if you are using 8 and add a little bit of blurred reflection to your objects or just try a little more specularity to show some highlights.

I do like the camera angle.
Nice work!

you have radiosity/gi available to you - take advantage of it. the lighting you've used is completely flat and lifeless.

I think strat is right it looks kinda dusty and flat like its in a closet that is just being opened for the first time in years.

but I do like it its quite nice lisiten to wes too he has good points arout the composition.

Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for.

@Wes
It's true the empty space may seem to be the point of focus now, because I tried to show all models equally. I'll be thinking on how I can solve this. I'm also still looking for an interesting but especially fitting ground texture. I'm afraid blurred reflections will completely kill my CPU...

@Strat & JIII
Ah well, as my poor CPU already kicked the bucket anyway, I guess I'll give that a shot too... :)

i agree with wesware on this one the comp is wrong...view angle is fine...but your eye is drawn to the central grey area between all objects.

no power leads...games...magazine...clutter to make it more life like...also grey surface not liking...maybe grey is fine but need some life adding...someone mentioned radiosity which might help.

may be instead of the two stacked on top on left...but one on its side leaning against the other etc.

dunno at a bit of a loss...its got loads of potential though bud...so don't be discouraged in anyways and keep hacking away at it..cos it will come good and be worth the extra effort.

I agree with pretty much all thats been said,

You have done some great modelling and reproductions of the gear, so you need to make an evironment to set them off - whether it be a deliberate, dusty old shelf in a bedroom, or spread out on a table, but if you can't make the most of them all in one scene, do several perspectives, focusing on each in turn!

HDRI wll defintely help in realism and sparking the highights and life into it, along with more randomness and DOF blur. :)

I like all the ideas so far, but i thought it might be really cool to see all the old systems in a box just kinda piled on top of eachother, and maybe you're looking in the closet at the box full of old toys? just an idea. like the stuff.

Wesware summed this up very well, so there is not really a lot more to add.
Just a thought though, are you trying to show a progression here from old to new? if so why not try and bring that thought a bit more into the composition it may help at least to define where you want the focus to go.I would say try and keep the compositon simple though (depending on what you are trying to achieve), it also really helps to break things down into geometric forms like Wesware has done, your eye will follow these forms, and be aware the area "around" an object also has form.
And nice work on the models by the way.

Ah yes - negative space!

I thought my art tutor was a loon when he first mentioned that (well he was actually!) but he was right! :applause:
