And we start all over again! And I thought I'd get a little rest over the summer! ;)

What a great theme this time, I'm so excited about this one! This time around, I really hope I can come up with a great *finished* image at the end! Key word, *finished*. I'll be making and following a detailed schedule. I have so little free time, this is the only way I'll be able to make it! ;)

As for my idea, when I think secret agents and spies, I think espionage, and in turn I think Cold War. And one of the most iconic locations of the Cold War, Moscow. My scene will be taking place on Red Square in the center of Moscow. I'm still working out the exact details of it, but I'll keep you guys posted!

Hopefully I'll cross paths again with familiar "faces" from previous challenges! I'm looking forward to seeing your entries as well! Best of luck to everyone who enters!

Heias Chris!
I had to cover my face because of all the "Secracy" going on in this challenge, that's why you didn't see me, but hey, good luck buddy and let's see some of your fantastic creations!
Red square sounds like a great Idea, by the way!

First update.

warpv

Ok, so a little more about my concept. Like I said, it takes place during the Cold War. Spies used to use "dead drops" to sneak out information to other agents. They'd use many different locations, like a hole in a tree, under a bridge and...under a park bench. Now, whether or not an agent would be crazy enough to leave a dead-drop to be picked up smack dab in the middle of Red Square remains to be seen. But I thought I'd have a little fun with it!:) So in my image, a park bench, with the "dead-drop" that will be stuck underneath, in the middle of Red Square!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Square

The image above is the blocking I made for making everything the right proportions. It'll also work as a concept sketch to show you guys what I have in mind. I also did 3 slightly different camera angles...which one do you prefer?! Any suggestions on composition?

Comments and suggestions are always greatly welcome! :)

Hey Christopher!!

Great to see you in this challenge my friend!! :D
Like a lot your initial concept, great potential on it!! And that perspective looks really great, I like a lot the point of view. Perhaps a mailbox with agent 13 in it hahahahahaha... kidding :D
Cool work, and looking forward for more updates, suscribed to your thread :D Cheers my friend!!

06-14-2009, 06:09 PM
Yeah, I like the thinking behind this one a lot. I suspect that the 2nd shot's going to work best for the dead-drop beneath the bench, as it draws attention to that area more.

warpv
06-14-2009, 09:41 PM
Thanks a lot guys! :) Great to see you here!

I still haven't decided on my camera angle...so if you guys have any preferences: 1, 2 or 3?!

I'm currently starting on the modeling of Saint Basil's Cathedral: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Basil%27s_Cathedral

I'll try and have an update up soon!

mdavid

Cool! He's started! And I'll add that it's mighty good to see you in the challenge too.

I really like the wide-angle-lens look you have going here. It adds some interest and a hint of extra drama/tension to the scene.

I'm finding it hard to pick a favorite render, especially at this early stage in the project, but if I had to make a choice I'd perhaps say number 2, but with the camera pointed very slightly more to the left so that the chair is not so close to the edge of the frame

warpv
06-16-2009, 02:52 AM
Thanks Mark! Yeah, I guess I'll just save those 3 camera angles and then check back later when the modeling is more advanced to see which one works best! Hope to see you around!

The modeling I've seen in this thread is amazing; completely taken on the Red Square in my mind when I go through your stills. I will have to say I really like camera angle 3 as well.

I can't wait to see more updates-it's modelers such as yourself that made me want to see if I can attempt the same. Even if my computer refuses. LOL

Thanks a lot mate! :) Characters...humm...not at the moment... I'm not that good with characters...so I'm trying to see if I want to include one or not... I was planning on having really tiny people in the distance on Red Square, but nothing close-up.

Hi Christopher!

Thanks again for reminding me of the challenge, I was not much around the last weeks:hmm: ...Cold war, Moscow and Red Square...sounds promising to me! And seeing the start of your modeling (and your Notre-Dame!) I think I'm looking forward to a really nice scene with lot of beautiful details:thumbsup: . Good luck to you and I hope you'll find the time to finish this one. Really amazing architectural disciplin! Bravo!
Only one tiny question; do you use scaffle for building these great meshes, or just a regular ladder?
:curious:

DarwinsMishap
06-25-2009, 06:23 PM
Wow-you're really getting along in that tower topper. Everytime I get a chance to see it I see more details that I missed prior-and those are the previous WIP pictures, not the new ones! :)

Characters...Well, you ARE allowed to use pre-modeled models, you can try that venue if you don't want to model people ontop of the architecture. I've never modeled anything (successfully, that is.), nor do I have the free time to start making that attempt other than a few small details I'm going to try and do in Carrara, so I'm going pre-made with my textures/shaders/matte painting over them. Just an idea?

Great work so far here!!

Mark - Thanks a lot mate!

Sabrina - Thank you so much for stopping by! :) Too bad that you won't be joining us in the challenge this time around. I hope you will find a bit of time to stop by once in a while, I really need all the support I can get to finish this one! :p

Mat - You see, I have this small flying machine that helps me. I just hop in, grab some brick and mortar and off I go! I'm able to hover at any height I want, making it much easier this way! Eliminating any use for scaffolding or ladders. Still, putting every brick by hand is a very time consuming process, that's why the updates are still only coming in slowly! ;)

DarwinsMishap - Thanks! Yeah, I'm almost done with the main central tower! More updates soon. As for the characters...I wasn't aware that you could use a pre-made model. Maybe I'll look into it...but really only if I have time to finish everything else! Which at this pace, I doubt! :curious:

varma
06-27-2009, 04:58 PM

Gee, warpv you are... a machine! :applause: Just remember we all want you to finish on time!Artur - So yes, I would also like to see myself finish on time! That is why, realistically, with the very little amount of free time I have, I will have to scale down my idea a bit. Maybe if I didn't have a job and could afford to work on this all day, it would be different, but I just don't have enough time. (Still haven't found that store!) So fear not, I'm keeping the same concept I had originally, and I'm going to finish my model of St-Basil. I'll just frame it from a lot closer, so I don't have to make as much of the other buildings/walls/towers/etc. It'll work out good in the way that I'll have less to model and therefore more chance to finish in time and it will also (hopefully) allow the viewer to see more of the hard worked detail I put into this model...

Another tower...number...? I'm losing count here!

hehe, we are loosing count too, but it doesn't matter, all the model you produce, I'm willing to watch and enjoy, you got a nice way of "builing" these models, very intriquate!
Again, the doom looks great, and of course the windows!
Hope your (hardware) system can handle all the data, sure it's getting dense here!
Be well!

Mat - Thanks for sticking around! ;) I've finally finished the main tower and the 4 secondary towers (I'm rendering out the last one right now, should have an update up soon!) and now I'm moving on to the 4 tertiary towers. That's a lot of towers! And finally the base and balcony/stairs...

And yes, for now my computer is keeping up! Last time I modeled something of this magnitude with my Notre-Dame, my computer really was having a rough time following at the end! But for now, everything is just fine! I'm am, however, a little behind on my schedule already! I really need to find more time to be able to finally finish the modeling and move on to textures! :wip:

Gunilla - Thank you! :)

Ok, so here's finally the last of the secondary towers! I'm now modeling the tertiary towers and the base roof. Wow, exhausting stuff!

Ok, so I thought I'd post a render of what I have so far...the main tower, the 4 secondary towers and the base of the roof. Still plenty more to do, but it's getting there! This is the back view by the way, in the final image we'll see it from the front. By the way, if you guys have any suggestions/comments, they are more than welcomed!

Wait... so.. this is the back view.. so... in the final image.. we won't see this side? :surprised

That's..... a lot of work we won't see....

I am in awe at the level of sheer work.. and that's only the roof!

How large is the final image? Detail of this level is hard to see even at 4,000 pixels wide given the blocking you have shown before. (the Park Bench/chair is the one that will dominate everything).

I really just hope you can make it... So much has gone into it.

And yeah, this is only the top part, still have to do all the bottom half! :surprised As for the resolution of the final image, I'm going to render it as big as my computer allows me too! For some reason, Maya crashes when I try to render too big resolution image... I'll have to do some tests and figure out why... If anyone knows, please let me know!

I'll try and find some time to keep working on it soon!

The dimensions for the Image category are roundabouts the 4k image academic standard (some 3,600 pixels wide).

Details should show up fine at that level. Some people tell me that's higher than High-Definition. So... maybe at around 3,600 - 4,000 pixels wide (landscape) or tall (portrait) should be enough.

Lighting and time of day depicted may help pop-out the details more.
But see, testing the lighting and rendering can be a whole new kettle of fish!

I actually feel a bit of pain thinking that you're building the WHOLE thing...

I mean, I wouldn't know for sure... but I think the guys who did the Vatican for "Angels & Demons" showed more restraint... :surprised I mean.. the whole thing? hahaah! :)

P.S.:

Your work and files should be handy though for making Hallmark cards set in Russia and if any client in the future wants to do a film or game in St. Peter's. :)

Well as you can see, sadly, I didn't have enough free time to do quite the final image I wanted...but I'm still quite proud of the modeling and wanted to submit a final image to hopefully be considered for the modeling part of the challenge!

I'll be back next challenge with hopefully a bit more free time and maybe a less ambitious project! 0.o

I also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who dropped by me thread during this challenge. Your words of encouragement are what brought me this far! Thanks a lot!

Wow Christopher!
That's an incredible and very very beautiful image you have produced, you should really be proud, kudos!
With the high res image, I can now see all the intriquate details you have put into this and I'm litterally drewling all over my desk! This could really jazz up your firstpage of portfolio and exhibit the power of your modeling and sense of architecture!
I'm not sure either weather I can finish in time, but I do hope to meet you in another challenge and do it all again!
Put that poor system of yours in rest now and have a very well deserved break yourself!

Hello Christopher,

Well, this is very pretty image. :)

It's not the greatness you originally envisioned I'm sure. But there is no doubting the talent and patience that you have in working your craft.

You will be right at home in the world of Digital Sets and for projects that require reproductions of landmarks and notable buildings (eg: Angels & Demons Vatican Sets, GI JOE Eifel Tower shot, etc.)
