View Full Version : Unlocked joint won't rotate

One of the joints in my skeleton doesn't rotate. It's a forearm joint, so the the scale and transforms are locked, and the Rotate X & Y are also locked. In the channelbox, only Rotate X is exposed, but it's not locked. When I try to rotate the joint (or enter a value into the channel box), nothing happens: it zeros out. The joint does have rotation limits, but when I turn them off, I get the same no-rotate result.

I oriented it to a control NURBS circle, which now moves about the x-axis without rotating the joint. In the Hypergraph, nothing except the constraint is connected to the joint.

Is there something I might be missing that could lock the joint? If not, is there a way to replace the joint with a new one without messing up my skeleton? I haven't bound the skeleton to the model yet, so changing joints won't cost me weight painting.

I figured out what was wrong. I'm rigging the right arm after the left, following the Art of Rigging's method. I had forgotten that I shifted the pivot on the arm IK from the forearm to the wrist (so it looks like it goes from shoulder to wrist, but actually goes to the forearm) and connected the shoulder to the wrist. That locked the forearm joint. One of those dumb mistakes I'm happy to have made (and learned from).
