Roary The Racing Car is a British production about a racing car and his friends. Chapman Entertainment, the creators of Roary and Fifi and the Flower Tots started the series in UK and it has now spread around the globe.

Roary was originally started as a stop motion TV series, it was decided that the use of 3D could be incorporated to be able to extend the possibilities beyond what could be done with real models. Studio Liddell in England was called apon to build the entire Roary set and characters in 3DS Max. The difficulty of this task is it would need to match the live stop motion models exactly and be able to animate and render exactly the same as the filmed version. TV episodes would be using both methods mixed together so any change from one to the other would stand out.

It is always a pleasure to read your mini-production focus pages Paul!

I know of a few kids that would be all over Roary the racing car!

Looks like a really interesting project. You tackle a lot of fascinating rigging issues in your projects. I'd love to learn more. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Paul, that's the second project you've worked on that my son loves to watch! :D

I like to watch roary with him and to find which part was CG and which part was stop motion. Now it seems that will be all CG, right?

BTW, do you know which renderer they used?

I believe it was all Vray and I don't know that there are any plans to make it all 3D, as far as I know it will remain a mix of both traditional stop motion and 3D.

Glad that every one likes it. Always hard to find the time to put together little write up like this when I'm busy with other projects. Keep an eye out for the next that is coming about Fifi and the Flowertots.

Yep, we worked on Fifi as well as another project for the same company but I'm now sure that it is public as of yet.

For Fifi we also did many of the character models as well as the rigs and animation pipeline using the RAIC system.

Studio Liddell have updated their website recently & they have Fifi Stuff on there.

Great work Paul, it's always interesting to see what you've been up to! :D
