I'm not too shure about where to go for this one but for the moment I like the idea of the classical detective in trenchcoat best.
I think I'll let him have what he was looking for while running away from a crook. hmm, things might change, let's see.

Ok, the look is still not defined but the idea takes up a shape. My spy/agent/detective has got what he was looking for but was seen. Now the crooks are after him and he tries to get away alive.
since the concept is still quite "fluent" I'm quite curious where my inspiration takes me.

insprations so far: different parts of the movies indiana jones, sin city, last boyscout, hellboy, blade runner

lovin your concept
it's quite in a motion and full of strength
maybe the composition shouldbea little tight to focus on the main story:)
fascinating idea anyway:)
looking forward to see your work~^^

I'm pretty shure now my story will take place in the mid 1930ies, great depression, high unemployment rate, high crime rate and a sense of criminal energy around every corner... a perfect place for a spy to find out things he is not supposed to.
So my entry will be very classical, but not too reality based. The glas framed street phone didn't fit into that time so it got kicked out. I changed the camera and composition because I think it gives a better focus on the story. Thanks for that advice by the way.

I'm not too shure about the big boss behind the window watching his footmen chase my hero spy though, but...well I don't have to be at the moment.

I'm modeling some clothes at the moment so I needet a proper reference. I put on some clothes, got in pose, did a terrific (or maybe not so terrific) job taking the photo and even a "better" job cutting out the backgroud. Oh well, its good enough as a reference. :)

WIP coming up soon.

Hello!

I like the concept so far, as well as the idea of the big boss keeping an eye on his henchmen below. The camera angle reminds me something out of a comicbook inspired movie (Batman, Spirit)-I like that touch.

Can't wait to see more.

First rought clothing is done, further refinement will be done in ZBrush. The suit does not have arms jet because there is still a coat to cover them.

Good idea with the reference. I know it looks funny but its a really good idea.

However I would set your camera to timer or video and really get into the scene and get some better reference. There isnt much emotion or drama in your pose and the 3d model kind of shows it.

Maybe get a friend to shoot you with a water gun and you will get some real human reaction to someone getting shot at so get some fantastic reference.

Look forward to seeing more

Funny idea with that water gun, I'll concider that. The reference though wasn't really supposed to reflect an emotion, it was intended to show the folds of the clothing. I was so concentrated looking at that tiny LCD on the camera to get myself in the frame that I made a real crapy expression on my face I can't possibly use for anything but the trash bin ;)

oh I'm so glad this isn't a photo-challenge :D

So here is my oldtimer. Far from reality and even further away from perfectly modeled geometry. Since its not so prominent in the picture and will be overpainted after rendering I call that model finished.

I used this photo as an inspiration on how to model my own street light. it will look different but wil have sort of the same feeling to it.

Your stuff is coming along pretty well. Only thing that bugs me is the pose. Maybe it's because the hands aren't posed yet or there's no face yet. But I think you could try something that's a little bit more exaggerated and dynamic. Maybe open his legs a bit more and/or let the arm that's by his belly fling towards the side.

Cool stuff!! :)

mcscher
06-21-2009, 09:45 PM
yes the pose does need a bit more attention. in fact my spy is in a running pose but you can't see it properly because of the camera angle and tilt. his left hand on the belly will hold on tight to his special spy camera I have not built jet and his upper hand is held high to protect his face from the glas spinters indicated on the left. I still need a gadged and I like the hands where they are but still the pose needs more attention and I will have a look at it.

I changed a few things like the glas splinters of a shot window. I didn't want a black window and a enlighted one would have drawn too much attention to it. well that's it then for the glas splinters and with it my pose...

It would make any sence to cover your face with your protecting hand If there is nothing flying around to protect it from, now would it?

I like the composition better now and the pose now shows more of a running position but it is still not satisfying. not at all!

unfortunately my character is a non-rigged character and therefore hard to modify. I guess I'll just have to create him from scratch again and this time rigg him as if I wanted to animate him. That way I have way more control over my character and find a good pose I feel comfortable with. Should have done that from the start...

any suggestions to the future pose? My character will still be running away from the over-gun-powered crooks of into the left of the picture but I'm open for any ideas.

Hi, your work seem to be going pretty good. an idea for his position could be (imo) the spy crouched behind a crate box, with the box being hit, and his face expression focused looking at the object. on the other hand i think it makes little sense the object being held in his hand, since he is a professional spy the object should be being carried in a mallet, and in the hand a pistol would be a must.

just my opinion...

good continuation

time for an update.

I modelled a few more buildings and refined the exising ones, put on some basic shaders, refined the lighting and added an ambient occlusion.

so my set is starting to look like one and I'm quite satisfied with it for a WIP stage.

I took out the character because I wasn't happy with the pose but I will bring him back in once I found a suitable pose that fits to the story.

I have a slight problem with my overall brightness and could use some help.

I create my scene on a pc and a fairly decent tft monitor and adjust my colors and brightness on that monitor.
I only go online with my macbook pro and when I view my uploaded pictures they are way too bright. I can adjust my display brigness but thats not really going to help me create a better picture

now I have a standart gamma of 1.8 set on my mac and a standard gamma of 2.2 on my pc, wich will most likely be the source of my problem, but to which gamma should I adjust the brighness of my pictures?

should I even go for the middle (gamma 2.0) ???

Even though the changes are not very noticable I did change a whole lot.

First I split things up into several passes due to very high render load resulting in crashes while trying to render the beauty pass. Secondly I added some passes to enhance the overall look. And last but not least I
started my first actual compositing in Photoshop. I did change some levels and curves before but not to that extend.

There isn't much time left and I still got heaps to do, especially correcting some render mistakes I still have in this picture and of course scultping the head and hands. I guess I saved the best for last ;)
btw, this is a 2k rendering and hopefully my computer will not have aditional problems when I start my final render at 5k resolution. Hm time will tell.

Let's see how you like it.

The streets were wet, it had been raining all day. It had cleared up, the night was well lit by the moon, too bright you might say. It would make it hard to stay unseen. The wind kisses my lips with a bitter taste of apprehension to it. Still I had to find out what Johnny was up to. Johnny The Rough they call him 'round here. He has his fingers in every stinkin' slippery business and his men are like hound dogs that won't let go once they have picked up their victims scent. It's best to not let them know I'm here. We had an eye on Johnny for quite a while now, we knew he was up to something. It wasn't the usual stuff, no black mailing, dealing or smuggling. This seemed to be big and very unsettling to the agencies board. We had to find out what it is that he is up to. They already sent two agents but both failed and now the mission is up to me. I cannot fail. I must find out!
Johnny ran a cinema among other facilities where he does his smudgy business. I went up on the roof and got in through a window. I had my camera with me, my precious Argus C44 Special IR Edition. The best camera an agent could have. with its big zoom I can stay out of sight and still get a close look. The infrared device lets me shoot in the dark without a betraying flash. There is no time for playing around with lesser equipment. I must find out!
Of course I have my gun with me. A Colt Detective Special, my handy little companion that saved my life more than once. I never go without it, although I don't expect be be seen. I stay low in the shadows and close to the wall behind everything that provides cover. I finally got a glimpse of Johnny. He was standing in the middle of a few men, talking. I had to get closer. I must find out!
I now have a good spot. I see the police commissioner, the mayor and probably a hand full of lawyers. All these so trustworthy persons together with Johnny can only mean one thing. It seems like there is a big bribe going on. I take my pictures but I still ask myself the same question over and over again. What is Johnny up to? I have to get closer to hear what they are talking. I must find out!

Damn...!! they have spotted me! I got to get out, no time for fancy hiding now, got to run...RUN!

I changed my compositing tool from Photoshop to the Softimage FX-Tree as it gives me better control over the effects I wanted to integrate such as DOF and glow. I could have done most of the comp in Photoshop but I prefer a node based system and therefore the FX-Tree was the way to go.
