Invisible ink, Cap'n Crunch code rings, glasses with noses attached, fedora hats. Assembling hostage letters out of cut out letters from the newspaper. Tree houses with secret passwords.
Yeah, baby, yeah.
Hey there Theresa and welcome to a new exciting adventure! Now go and create something amazing!! ;) Good luck!
06-12-2009, 11:23 AM
'It's really quite simple. With these fiendishly clever disguises, we can easily infiltrate the Count's castle and recover the secret diamond.'
and here's my secret lair:
I'm just gathering together some ideas before the sketches go down. :D
06-12-2009, 11:33 AM

*hugs* great to see you in and alive.
da werden wir ja vielleicht mal wieder mehr voneinander sehen!
have a great day and many ideas

Hoffentlich so! Ich denke das, die Bilder fur diese Challenge wird fantastich sind. Entschuldigung Sie, meines Deutsch habe sogar noch schlimmer...:argh:
But to distract you from it- here's another inspiring picture- every spy story needs a villain!
06-12-2009, 12:47 PM
Good to see you back again for the latest challenge
hopefully I'll get more time to keep an eye on your work this time round and as always look forward to seeing something fantastic
Good Luck Theresa

Three ideas I came up with while washing my hair:
1) The setting is a tropical beach. A team of spies have just washed up in their giant whale submarine and are trying all sorts of gadgets to try and drag it back into the water. This may or may not be combined with 2)
2) International Spy Team : Spies from all over the world with their characteristic weapon of choice. Example: The Irish spy has red hair and poisons pints of Guinness which he slips to his victims, the French spy has arsenic in the tip of his french bread which he uses to stab people. The english use their monocles for laser vision which can bore a hole through the chest, etc etc... This one would be fun. :D
3) Introducing Sam Smith: Surveillance And Monitoring Shopping (Mall) Invigilance Transmitter (Hefty)-- this nifty cyborg spy has many rolls of fat which hide various spying gizmos. He's on a scooter which allows him to trundle around the mall and ensure that people aren't Up To No Good. Something like this: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/62/196818470_9c7cac363f.jpg?v=0
He needs to fuel himself up well with pretzels and lemonade, of course. His main targets are the goth teenagers who target his house on Halloween night, even though he really should be keeping an eye out for rotten business practices....
What do you think so far? :D
welcome in, and good luck!! looks like u got a lot of ideas!;)
06-12-2009, 02:13 PM
I always liked those spy lairs with the large windows, wonder how much the rent is per month?
06-12-2009, 02:25 PM
Good luck and have fun, Theresa! Thanks for the great references and ideas (because, of course, I'm spying on your thread!)
06-12-2009, 03:23 PM
very nice concept :) i wanted to make a large window to my project too ^^ it's seems every evil genius have a large windowed place ^^
looks kool! i like a lot the mood of the image...
06-12-2009, 04:07 PM
Dunno if spying could get you disqualified, but here's a sneaky good luck to ya, ow yeah and another thing, this never happened.
06-12-2009, 04:35 PM
The best part of working as a spy is going home to your private island after a long day when all your gizmos are acting up and you know that he knows that you know that he knows that you know where the trigger button is...
06-12-2009, 04:37 PM
yay! its a much better topic than I feared... =)
06-12-2009, 04:42 PM
my goodness Theresa, its only the 1st day and ur progressing so much:D some really cool idea uve got there.ill keep lurking in for more.
06-12-2009, 05:10 PM
06-12-2009, 05:13 PM
....although a close second must be waking up early in the morning and, after a pleasant cup of coffee, setting off on your journey in your whale submarine?
06-12-2009, 07:06 PM
wow! already sketching? I envy you :) cant wait for more of ur ideas, always a pleasure checking ur thread!
06-12-2009, 11:28 PM
Mike: You can bet I'll be spying on YOUR thread for inspiration as well! I assume you're joining, of course? You'll be getting horses' heads in your bed otherwise. :D
Doublep: All the better to see the conclusion of your evil plans, of course. mwahhahaa!
Oz: Me too :) I was looking for an Incredibles feel...Eames era type thingy.
Justame: Nothing ever happened....
Darksuit: The topic is fantastic! I think we'll all have a lot of fun playing around with it.
Michael: It's just the beginning- and this is my favourite part! I always like playing around with ideas almost more than doing the actual painting....your turn now, come on, we want to see a sketch! :wip:
Blaz: Ah well, I'm on my holidays at the moment, so I have more free time than usual...and I'm working on my portfolio this summer, so this challenge couldn't have come at a better time- I wanted to get some colour keys together, so expect to see a LOT of sketches here!
06-13-2009, 04:20 AM
you dazzled us with some fantastic work last time and you're off to a brilliant start again! Once again, I love the colour and energy in your sketches and ideas. Good luck with this!
06-13-2009, 02:36 PM
Thanks Theresa. As usual, time is against me but I REALLY want to do something for this. Probably a smouldering noiresque agent with a healthy dose of Bacall and Lamaar! ;) No change there then!
Good luck, and have fun!
Love your creativity and ideas for this challenge, really cool concepts! :D And Iīm ready for this great journey :D ( and the bagpacks are full of tequila, champagne and orange juice hahahaha :D) Waiting for more updates!
06-14-2009, 02:14 AM
I love the whale submarine. What imagination : D
06-14-2009, 04:23 AM
I love your concepts Theresa! :D
06-14-2009, 08:35 AM
Oh dear - what a crazy wild start you got here! Love your concepts so far - and I'm sure you will come up with lots more before deciding. Looking forward to that!
06-14-2009, 09:27 AM
nice concept. looking forward to ur progress :)
06-14-2009, 01:54 PM
Great work so far, I love the style of the concepts and the fun, playful mood overal.
06-14-2009, 06:59 PM
JHarford Fun is the name of the game :)
nandlaskar thanks! I tend to do a LOT of concepts before I settle on something I like....makes it more fun though!
Gunie: I'm looking forward to it too! Where's your entry?
Ali: Thanks. :D Where's YOUR entry??
Smirtouille I always wanted a whale submarine...'You can't always have what you waa-aant!'
Ferx Of course, the tequila is always an integral part of my art...it's why everything is so insane. ;)
Poshspice I'm looking forward to seeing that! I love the femme noirs, I'll probably have a small role for one in mine somewhere, but I'll leave the pin up roles for yours :)
mdavid The energy comes from Tequila ;)
Not sure what's up with the formatting here, oh well, it makes my post more interesting anyway, haha.
06-14-2009, 07:59 PM
You're hanging out with the one you love and unfortunately that's just when they catch up with you...
06-14-2009, 08:47 PM
I really like that last one, Paperclip. Great colors and mood.
There is one thing that's bugging me, however. When I first looked at the image, my eye went like this:
I completely missed that the shadow was of a guy with a gun, figuring it was just a shadow from a tree, and I immediately wondered what was in that clearing at the end of the arrow that was so dangerous.
06-14-2009, 09:28 PM
I see what you're saying there. I probably won't be going with this image though, but thanks for the input- I'm surprised I didn't notice that before (or maybe I did but I was more concerned with other things at the time??)
Either way, I'll keep it in mind, thanks!
06-15-2009, 09:14 AM
paperclip! It's been a while.
You are an idea machine here. Can't wait to see where you end up taking it.
06-15-2009, 10:02 AM
Yeah, I think you need to rework this compostion, as my eye did exactly the same thing that Swizzle mentions. However, I really like the actual idea, the discarded picnic etc. It's a nice twist on the theme.
06-15-2009, 11:48 AM
2 pages of comments already !
Have fun Theresa ! ;)
06-15-2009, 07:53 PM
Weeee Paperclip. I'm loving the "Handbook to the Spying Life." You should put all of these concepts into a neat little twisted childrens book. :D Good luck.
06-16-2009, 11:58 AM
Another familiar artist :) Good luck, paperclip :)
06-20-2009, 05:43 AM
I love the whale submarine one! That made me giggle...and yeah, that would be an interesting day... :) Can't wait to see what you come up with!
06-20-2009, 06:05 AM
Thanks everyone! Wyatt, I like the guidebook to spying idea.... here are a couple more ideas that I might put down on paper:
Building the ultimate spy out of cheap materials from Aldi/Walmart/substitute cheap supermarket of your choice.
The Trees Have Eyes : A giant oak is used for spying in an area, the trunk has a hundred eyes with which it keeps its owner updated.
06-20-2009, 05:56 PM
A rather different slant on things- the tree itself is the secret agent! See all the eyes focusing on the person on the tree? The little random things are little green ears. One should always be careful what one says in the forests....
(I'm thinking of having a little hand-bird as well)
fun stuff as usual!
Good luck on the challenge.
06-20-2009, 07:31 PM
You have great stuff and ideas here:thumbsup:
keep it up:beer:
06-20-2009, 08:46 PM
colourized version of the previous sketch, kind of liking this one.
06-21-2009, 08:25 AM
Surrender now, your only option is to surrender or die.
06-21-2009, 08:29 AM
Don't make a woman like everyone else, you can't with all the surprising ideas you have.
This one is pretty cool http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/24/17652/17652_1245517002_medium.jpg
Surrealist psychedelic secret agent.
06-21-2009, 08:34 AM
i like the tree hav eyes idea:D
06-21-2009, 08:51 AM
I actually painted this yesterday for something else, but it struck me that it might work for this. Here's Griselda (temporary name) who constitutes the I.T support service for the M15. I could give it the whole works- discarded cigs, old trash magazines, teapots on doilies, you get the idea....but don't let it fool you.
She knows her gadgets, gizmos and thingamabobs.
06-21-2009, 09:36 AM
Nice character :applause:
06-21-2009, 09:47 AM
Run, Lola, run. Run away from the villains. Get the emerald to safety!
06-21-2009, 04:55 PM
Even the super high tech gadgets break down now and again. Gertrude, the IT woman (see a couple of posts above) has compiled a huge list of troubleshooting guides for all the different gizmos M15 uses in the spying service.
06-22-2009, 07:24 PM
06-22-2009, 07:38 PM
hi Theresa, glad to see your work again, latest sketch is nice , I love color ,
06-22-2009, 09:57 PM
Here's Gertrude again! This time she's in her top secret basement from which she does all her IT support for the spies in the greater metropolitan area. There'd be lots of gadgets on the workspace and the area behind the men (who are bringing her yet another thing to fix)... the fun would be in putting lots of junk everywhere....
06-22-2009, 10:00 PM
The last one is hilarious! I think that is a great road to go.
Keep the funny stuff coming!
06-22-2009, 10:20 PM
I love the Gertrude concept :)
06-22-2009, 10:39 PM
I love all your concepts, but i think Gertrude tops it all. Hahaha!! Show us more.
06-22-2009, 10:39 PM
Hi TheresaGreat suff !! I like a lot your last sketch.
keep it up
06-23-2009, 12:07 AM
The last one is very funny, that is an extremely experienced agent :D
06-23-2009, 01:10 AM
Allas, i have broken free of your amazingly mesmerizing concepts miss super secret humour agent. My stomach will recover from all the laughter ... Very soon!
06-23-2009, 01:16 AM
this is the best so far,the concept alone is awesome and from the way it looks now,it will result in a great outcome:)keep it coming mate
06-23-2009, 01:21 AM
I have to agree with others, this concept's great :)
06-23-2009, 05:36 AM
Wow, that's some feedback! It seems Gertrude is going over well. :D I think I'll probably go with this one. I might do a few more concepts for others while keeping this one at the foremost of my grey cells, then choose one for posterity.
Gertrude thanks you for liking her, but would prefer some whiskey to go into her coffee. :D
06-23-2009, 06:19 AM
That last one is really nice . . . telling a story in a stylized manner, like it very much.
I appreciate about going for some more cocepts, lets see what else you have in mind.
keep it up . .
06-23-2009, 07:14 AM
i like the last one,you are rich with ideas.goodluck my friend
06-23-2009, 07:17 AM
Just tightened up the Gertrude concept a bit. Any suggestions would be very welcome, esp. with regards to composition, values etc...
06-23-2009, 07:19 AM
not bet but little bit same as my idea :)
06-23-2009, 08:53 AM
this one is looking nice dude . will come back to spy ur updates. he he eh :)
06-23-2009, 09:12 AM
Love the new concept, Theresa. Go with it!
06-23-2009, 09:47 AM
The kids got hold of the super high tech gadget. Muahhahahaha! Betcha can't catch us!
06-23-2009, 04:19 PM
Some more tightening up of The Trees Have Eyes. I might do two paintings and decide which one to submit at the end. Do you guys prefer the Gertrude or this one?
06-23-2009, 05:40 PM
Do I like Gertude? I think I was taught by Gertrude. No lie she bears a certain resemblance to my original IT instructor.
I love her let 'em wait attitude. I recommend her office resemble the one from IT Crowd (http://damagestudios.net/images/IT-1.png) though you're pretty much there already. In case you couldn't tell I prefer Gertrude. :D
06-23-2009, 06:07 PM
this thread is filled with cool ideas and i wish i had one!! :) trees have eyes is my personal fav, a very original interpretation of the theme. can't wait to see more!
06-23-2009, 06:15 PM
The trees have eyes is a cool image, no doubt. But I think the gertrude one is more on-topic. I'd go with that one, if I were you. :)
06-25-2009, 12:09 PM
A little more work done on The Trees Have Eyes- I might submit this one to the gallery and the Gertrude one for the Challenge...
06-25-2009, 02:15 PM
we want getrude! we want getrude! :)
The trees have eyes are coming along well, it might just be me, but the image seems a tad flat. . . yu know, lacking depth, unless that is intentional
06-25-2009, 02:26 PM
Well, you're definitely thinking out of the box, Theresa: I really can't see how this relates to the "secret agent" theme at all... Maybe the painting itself is a "secret agent" sent from the enemy camp of "strange behavior" or "alien-human interaction" spy on this future challenge!
Getrude does at least look like it's the right genre, 'though I don't quite "get it" either. She reminds me of Roz from Monsters, Inc... I don't know how to do those cool "spoiler" tags, but you probably know how the movie turned out? Anyhow, is that the concept?
06-25-2009, 03:20 PM
Well, the idea is that the trees are spies and she's only just realizing that now... as for Gertrude, it's a sort of 'behind the scenes' thing where she fixes the Bond gadgets when they break down (see 004,005 and 006 behind her?). The room would be full of gadgets in various stages of disrepair. Only today I sketched out some gadget concepts! Now, if only I can get the sketches to look decent once scanned in....
Zazill, I agree with you- it still needs a lot of work. I'm going to go with Gertrude for the challenge though, she seems to be going over well. :D
06-25-2009, 05:31 PM
a small concept sketch for the type of gadget I'll be putting in.
06-25-2009, 06:53 PM
Keep it going
06-25-2009, 07:42 PM
weee, another scifi chick!
Keep going, it looks great!
06-25-2009, 08:20 PM
06-25-2009, 08:21 PM
They're going to be on the walls, sort of like a gadget museum in the background.
06-25-2009, 08:21 PM
06-25-2009, 08:22 PM
Final one, huzzah. I don't really like designing guns, but it's rather necessary for this concept, so I thought it best to get it out of the way as soon as possible!
06-25-2009, 10:40 PM
Collection of random things that could be in Gertrude's office. Thanks to Kirt, Teck, Tobias and Jelmen for ideas!
There's a nice mix of grandma-ish stuff together with the hardware that she'd require for her job. Note the Thomas Kinkade poster...
06-25-2009, 10:59 PM
HA those are some fun guns!!!
06-27-2009, 07:06 PM
The fun part begins now! Colour decisions! They're titled a,b,c and d going clockwise. More on the way.
06-27-2009, 07:10 PM
Moar comps! This time e-h going clockwise. I'm leaning towards c and g. (CG!) What do you think?
06-27-2009, 07:30 PM
Hi PaperClip :),
In ur second color comp. The second one from top i.e the blue and the res-orange tone looks awesome.
It is really bringing the spyish atmosphere and the intensity needed for the main
06-27-2009, 08:57 PM
I think I'm getting a little closer to the colours I want to use...
06-27-2009, 10:37 PM
Fascinating watching the evolutioin of ideas Theresa. That tree thing had me freaked out. Great seeing how you play with colour balances to ge tthe comp to work the way you want it too.
Should be another doozie from you.
06-27-2009, 10:49 PM
your concepts are really something, its very nice to browse your ideas, specially liking the last one and the "eyed tree". keep it.
looking for more!
06-27-2009, 11:22 PM
great stuff.. Voting for the Gertrude concept. The tree eye one doesn't really have the same secret agent feel to it.
Cool to see you working with color concepts like that. I like the two at the bottom of your latest post. I think it is more natural with the warmth concentrated around the tungsten bulb. Maybe you should add another light source where she is working, for example some kind of working lamp? Maybe one of those with a giant magnification glass build into them. Some run on fluorescent bulbs so you could keep your cold color comp like in the bottom two concepts.
two silly ideas:
Make one the agents stand with an everyday item, like a coffemachine or something like that.
A must-have gadget in your piece would be some kind of auto-paperclipping-gun!
best of luck!
06-28-2009, 08:37 PM
hi theresa, i like the first one(left corner) + light from the screen because he is siiting right infront of the screen, good progress.
06-29-2009, 04:43 PM
i like your last idea, finding an original and good idea isn't that easy, good job and good luck
07-01-2009, 01:18 AM
Hi again! Sorry, life has been on the busy side lately so didn't get much chance to work on this. Thanks everyone for posting their favourite colour schemes, hopefully I'll get some more stuff up before the weekend.
A fun side note for these of you who were around for the Steampunk challenge- remember my brother had twins at the beginning of the challenge? Here's the pic I posted of them then:
Here's what they look like now:
How time flies! :D
07-01-2009, 02:33 PM
Gertrude concept is cool !
About the ligthing, maybe a blue color around Gertrude, if she works on a computer, that make sense with the light from the screen, if she is just listening to tapes, forget my advice...
And yellow color around the other spies looks fine to me... So color comp 3 bottomleft picture...
PS: Nice Nephews !
07-01-2009, 07:23 PM
nice comps! I think the darker color comps look better! Even darker maybe?
maybe the yellowish light is more reddish like candle light? with more saturation perhaps?
07-01-2009, 07:41 PM
Aw, the twins are so cute!
Of all the color comps, the one I like best is the one from post #66. That's the one with no color at all. I don't think that the palette needs to be that extreme - as gpepper pointed out, some blue from monitors would be nice - but Gertrude isn't an exciting character. Garish colors don't fit her. Something simple and subdued is more the right tone for her, imho.
Superb concepts, you have a fantastic creativity and great sketch skills, cool!
I love "Gertrude" concept :D, really original approach to the subject of the challenge and think color test "C" can work relly well with your idea :) I totally enjoying your proggress (and some tequilas, while watching your sketches hahahaha :D) Waiting for more updates!! Cheers!!
07-09-2009, 10:36 AM
I'm still trying to work out the lighting. I think I'm going to try and make a mockup of this situation and take a few photos- looks like some bribery is in order...
07-09-2009, 10:45 AM
This one is scarily close to reality!
07-09-2009, 11:18 AM
Hi nice update, happy to see your new image, keep it up and good luck :wip:
07-09-2009, 11:23 AM
I like your idea very much. Can I suggest some things?
First of all, may be vertical aspect ratio will work better? You'll be able to add more funny devices and gadjets on the table at the foreground. Comp looks better (i think) if you'll turn your main character so she look inside of the image as other characters are.
And also I have an idea of what spies brought to repair... :)
Here I painted what I mean. Just to make things clear. Don't be angry on this, please. :)
07-09-2009, 12:19 PM
Looking good - you're making me think of Brian Eno's song, "The Fat Lady of Limbourg":
The Fat Lady of Limbourg
Looked at the samples that we sent
And furrowed her brow.
You would never believe that
She'd tasted royalty and fame
If you saw her now.
But her sense of taste is such that she'll distinguish with her tongue
The subtleties a spectrograph would miss,
And announce her decision,
While demanding her reward:
A jellyfish kiss...
Very secret-agenty stuff...
07-09-2009, 01:50 PM
Thanks everyone for comments!
Peleng- I love your ideas, I should just submit your version. :D It gave me a few good ideas and I like the way it opens up the space- I was a tad worried about the way it felt kind of claustrophobic before (even though it was meant to be- it is a basement, after all!) but I like the way this gives me more space on the desk- I was actually thinking about doing something like that anyway, but it would have messed up the perspective a bit just tacking a bit on the end. I like your solution- I'm going to have to put my thinking cap on!
I love the new gadget they're bringing for her to fix. :D
Teapot- I've never heard of that song or the lyrics, but it suits it well! Maybe I'll call this the Fat Lady of Spybourg? :deal:
This is the most tedious part of it all right now- I like putting the doodads on, but I'm not a big fan of going around and defining EVERYTHING! At least this part will be over before too long, hopefully...
07-09-2009, 04:10 PM
Wow Theresa, you have so many ideas it's scary (the vodka hard at work). I'm keeping an eye on this thread from now on, Gertrude looks great to me. The trees have eyes is a bit wierdly artistic.
07-13-2009, 12:45 AM
I like Your idea and style. Fun!
excuse me for my cheek to say some. But!
if the cat on lady`s head will be orange-yellow color, it look like a crown. Gertrude - The Queen of It Support (or Spybourg)
07-13-2009, 02:22 AM
I love Gertrude! She's so many miles away from the sexy ladies one normally associates with the spy genre! I think you should go with the last set of colors, as they're less saturated. Traditionally, no one likes talking to the IT department and the IT department doesn't like talking to anyone, so drabber might be better. Also, I feel that it makes more sense to have the warmer lighting around the exposed light. I definitely look forward to whatever you end up doing, though!
(I'm still new here, but I believe inserting an obnoxiously animated smiley is proper etiquette?)
07-13-2009, 11:50 PM
Some volumetric lighting similar to what you had in your lighting mock-ups might help. The desaturated tones look good... but adding contrast might help further.
07-15-2009, 12:59 AM
Woo Clippy, looking good. I still think my favorite part is that she isn't paying any attention to them. :D
Agents - "Please Ms. Gertrude, could you pleeeease fix this?"
Gertrude - "I don't see any donuts!"
07-15-2009, 03:04 PM
Are you still working on this or are you off doing speedies? :curious:
07-16-2009, 11:05 AM
I'm still working on it, I promise! I'm at a family reunion at the moment though, so I've been busy- the twins need a lot of holding! I will finish this though, by hook or by crook. The comic book I'm working on is taking up little snatches of time in between as well, but it's so addictive! Add to that the unusually nice weather we're having here in Ireland and you get Gertrude complaining that her coffee is cold and she's still not done...
Good to see you in Theresa,
Its looking really good, I like the theme, plus a very cool composition, looking forward to seeing the details in this one, cheers

Only 22 days to go!
I took some good advice from Peleng (thank you!) and decided to turn Gertrude to face the right- it flows better that way- so the eye should be attracted towards the bare light (soon with moths!) , down to gertrude looking grumpy, up at the men and then back to Gertrude etc, etc. Now begins the mammoth task of making it look good...

Putting some junk into the background. I love the brain in a jar, always wanted one of those...
I don't like the way the computer monitor intersects the elbow or the things hanging from the ceiling. I guess it has to get worse before it gets better, but this looks so ugly to me right now!

I decided it needed a bit more colour- not too much though, but all the black and white made it look kind of unfinished, so I put in a subtle blue cast. Whaddayathink?

Thanks! I decided to go with the black and white version, but add a few hints of blue here and there to liven things up a little. More later today!

Thanks to everyone encouraging me to keep it up! There are many amazing works being created for this challenge, I'm afraid this will end up as being more a piece for my portfolio than any real contender, but I had fun doing this anyway...
