Hi!

This is a character I created for the short kong & bird I'm working
on right now at the German Film School with two other students.
Our deadline is the end of July. We use Maya 4.5.
With this still I won the first prize at this years animago award in
the category education/still/animals. (I know it doesn't mean anything):)

So I hope you'll see Kong animated at the end of the month.
C&C are always welcome!

i agree about having alot of character. great facial expressions.

a couple of things bother me though.. the transition from the beige to the brown on the face and the rest of the body.. and the color of the inside of his mouth. too orange and bright.

thanx for your comments everyone!

The color is not final. I thought about the mouth too. It's too bright and the
saturation is too high. Well now it's darker inside the mouth.

I made 32 blendshapes. I will post some more poses and faces during the day.

here is the Kong and Bird teaser. I made it in 2days for WIP3 (a party at the end of each term at the german film school). One day animation one night rendering and a half day sound. The rendering is not very good cause
I had to render it in one night. (the teaser won 2nd prize at animago 2003)
hope you like it.

thnx again.

Here is the wireframe of kong. I tried to model only with quads.
There are actually 2 triangles inside the mouth. :)

I love the way you are using his huge brow in the expressions!
One of the best recent characters!

How old is this primate?
Did you ever consider Fur?

The model is nice, the facial expressions are excellent!

Fur would complete it..

Good job:)

really nice character, the model itself is not that complicated, but it doesn't have to, its really clean and well shaped, the only thing i can crit on him is the hard edge between fur and skin, wouldn't it be better to texturize that seam, then to model it?
btw.
cool einen weiteren Berliner hier zu sehen, klasse Arbeit :)

I think he's ace, but his eye-brows make him look like his fur is a hooded top of some kind.

thnx everyone!

gagn and meats
We never thought obout using fur.
In the first term we had to draw a 2D short film. We had to finish it within one month but the project lasted much longer than we expected. So we had to go on woriking in the 2nd term where we got maya training.
After finishing our 2D short The Beauty Of Life (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72993&highlight=goro)
in march 2003 we didn't want to make a complex 3D movie cause we had fear not to be able to finish it on time (end of the 3rd term). That's why we didn't use fur cause it needs a lot of time.
Maya-Fur-On-Poly does not work well.:)

So we are working hard now to get our short finished until the end of the month.

Very interesting faces ... he's very cute! I can't wait to see the whole movie. ^_^

I'm especially fond of the facial expression that's on the bottom row, all the way to the right ;)

I must say I liked the cartoony take on kong. The animation on the facial expressions was wonderful. Did you use morph targets or is the face rigged?

A little suggest

from a max user

I think u must try to render him (it's very funny) with VRay with vray displacement fo the fur

I would like to see it

Hi! Happy to get still replies on this thread! Thnx guys.

actarus6:
I'm working already on a new project (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=103337) . But thnx for the
suggestion!

MKane:
Did you see the whole movie ore only the teaser?
I used Morph targets (Blendshapes in Maya)

great design, great facial expression.

Personal taste: I would relocate the ears to be more on the sides of the head. More human positioning. Secondly, I would give him a belly.

Definitely seems to have a great potential for facial animation. Great job
