Some more information would be nice...for example the modifier stack...
Without knowing that I would guess this to be a twofold rpoblem: Firstly, DirectX10 displays hidden edges (by default AFAIK...don't know how to turn it off). Secondly, your MSmooth (or TSmooth or whatever...) either switched off 'isoline Display' or collapsed. The first is easy to solve, just check the checkbox. The second one needs manual cleanup...

Sorry for the lack of information
Its made of 12 sided cylinders
stack is: symmetry / shell / Meshsmooth
The meshsmooth is iterations 1, isoline display is on and not collapsed.
I know its Dx 10, as everything is fine with dx9
Have tried to locate AFAIK, cant even find it
Do you know where its located?

Here you can see the same problem on a new box, no modifiers ect + settings as they are now

AFAIK (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/AFAIK) ;)
I would suggest switching Max to DirectX 9. Haven't heard a single good thing about DX10....
Customize > Preferences > Viewports tab > Select Driver > Advanced Direct3D. There you select DX9.

The same thing happened to me - the only thing that fix it was switching to 9
