View Full Version : Good sky/sun simulation
Frankg 06-08-2009, 09:02 PM Hi,
I found an old architecture-project of mine which I want to modernize.
Do you know a good solution for realistic sky and sunsimulation as C4D has?
Thank you for any help.

Dave Stoddards Lighting Studio-Tools could lend you a hand. Includes Heliodon.

And a heliodon video:

Frank,
I find that the most realistic sky is from photography mapped to a sky surface of some type depending upon the nature of the image. When ever I get to a beach or other area with an unobstructed view of the horizon I shoot skies. Gigs and Gigs of skies ! With as many degrees of coverage as possible.
Northern Lights has what I recall to be a free plug-in that reproduces sun positions.
I used to use Knoll Light Factory's for realistic flares in EIAS. Now there is not a UB version of KLF for EIAS so you need to comp in AE.

Hi Frank,
The Turbosquid website has a collection of unobstructed daytime, sunset and evening sky images with nice clouds. We bought one of their panoramic (360-degree) sunset images that measures 9000x4500 pixels for just $5. This image, mapped onto a big sphere centered on the objects in my scene, provides a full, 360-degree sky with no seam.

That's the first I've ever heard "C4D" and "realistic sky" in the same sentence, unless someone was using an alternate renderer or the Vue plugin for Cinema...
I'll second going the Turbosquid route, search "JohannesSchloerb" and he has several great sets of skies that are inexpensive and hi-res. They have a good range of normal to fantasy, and both day and evening. But any search of "sky" on turbosquid will bring up a ton of inexpensive imagery. Work great with EI's various HDRI solutions - what are there, like three or four now? Keep in mind to use a little distance fog in there for big scenes, or post-in some birds or extra atmosphere later (always easier than trying to fight the scene all in-camera)
Or import your scene into either Terragen or Vue if you -really- want realistic atmosphere. Just be prepared to wait a few weeks for the render if you use TG.
